Bradsby Group is seeking a Director of Preconstruction for Utility-Scale BESS projects, preferably based in Portland, OR, but open to remote candidates in the U.S. The role involves leading preconstruction efforts, managing design processes, and ensuring project readiness from development to construction. Candidates should have at least 10 years of relevant experience and a strong background in BESS systems and contract negotiation. Competitive compensation includes a base salary and incentives.
Director of Preconstruction – Utility-Scale BESS
Location: Portland, OR preferred | Open to remote (U.S.) for a strong fit
The OpportunityA fast-growing owner-operator in the utility-scale energy storage space is hiring a Director of Preconstruction to lead owner-side preconstruction for a national portfolio of battery energy storage (BESS) projects.
This role owns projects from early development through advanced preconstruction and handoff to construction, acting as the technical and commercial bridge between Development, Engineering, EPC, Procurement, and Construction.
What You’ll DoLead preconstruction execution for utility-scale BESS projects across major U.S. power markets
Translate development concepts into construction-ready, financeable projects
Manage early through advanced design (?30%) via internal and external engineers
Drive CapEx / OpEx and total cost of ownership modeling
Lead negotiation of EPC / EPCA agreements and major construction contracts
Resolve scope, pricing, and interface gaps between EPCs and OEMs
Ensure clean, risk-managed handoff to Construction
What We’re Looking ForDirect utility-scale BESS experience (owner / IPP side required)
10+ years in preconstruction, EPC, development engineering, or owner-side execution
Experience advancing projects from greenfield through advanced preconstruction
Strong commercial judgment and EPC contract negotiation experience
Working knowledge of BESS systems and HV infrastructure
Exposure to multiple U.S. power markets (ERCOT, CAISO, WECC, SPP, MISO)
Experience with augmentation planning and lifecycle cost considerations

Direct influence on cost certainty, risk, and project execution readiness
Competitive compensation and long-term incentive participation
Compensation: $200,000 – $265,000 base + plus annual bonus and long-term incentives. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, market alignment, and scope.
