The State of Rhode Island is hiring a Seasonal Sustainability Intern for part-time work in Spring and Summer 2026, offering flexible hours (maximum 20 hours/week) with a hybrid onsite/offsite arrangement after onboarding. The intern will support sustainability initiatives, assist event organizers with best management practices, and perform data collection and analysis. This position will work under the direction of DEM Sustainability Manager and support sustainability initiatives across the department, working with offices/divisions in the Bureau of Environmental Protection and Bureau of Natural Resources.For the event efforts, the intern will perform outreach, customer interaction, and assist event organizers with identifying and integrating best management practices (BMP) for sustainability into their events that are hosted at DEM Facilities. These BMP can range from material sourcing, waste management, local food sourcing, transportation, and green-house gas emissions. The intern collect data on events and keep track of event sustainability efforts in an organized manner that allows for monitoring of key performance indicators and development of performance dashboards. This position will assist with performing subject matter research, data mining, data logging, research and analysis to support materials management and lead by example projects. This work may include assisting with public workshops, community outreach, and will include attending regular meetings to stay current with project activities.Required Qualifications for AppointmentEligible candidates must have reliable mode of transportation and be at least 18 years of age. Comfort engaging with the public, strong interpersonal and clear spoken communication skills required.
