The University of California San Diego is hiring a Low Speed Electric Vehicle Technician to maintain and repair a variety of fleet vehicles, including electric and hybrid models. The role involves troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, using diagnostic tools, and maintaining accurate records. This full-time position is based on campus in San Diego Country Estates, with a work schedule from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, incumbents independently perform skilled work consistent with fleet industry standards to maintain, troubleshoot, repair, service, and adjust UC San Diego's diverse range of fleet assets. This role is responsible for maintaining a variety of equipment including automobiles, alternative fueled vehicles such as electric, hybrid, and plug-in-hybrid models, as well as trucks, vans, and sedans. The position is inclusive of specialized platforms such as Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) and Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs), ensuring all assets are maintained for official business use. Technicians must inspect and diagnose mechanical and electrical components and subsystems to determine necessary repairs, ranging from minor adjustments to major repairs
Along with industry standard tools and equipment used in automotive repair, this position will use electronic platforms such as diagnostic scan tools and fleet management systems. This includes using systems to diagnose and research problems, and completing electronic work orders by accurately recording parts and labor to enable customer billing to ensure operational efficiency, incumbents must keep accurate maintenance records and prepare reports as necessary. Primary work location will be within the central garage, with periodic field work when responding to service calls around the university campus
Incumbents may train and/or provide work direction to Assistant Automotive Technicians and/or Automotive Attendants
QUALIFICATIONS
Substantial skills in preventive maintenance, breakdown, repair and trouble shooting of automotives. Ability to effectively identify required parts for vehicle repair, prepare estimates of costs, time and materials. Experience with technical automotive diagnostic equipment. Including the use of lab top based diagnostic platforms, scanners, emissions analyzers, and other modern diagnostic related equipment. Ability to inspect and diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions and perform a variety of skilled repairs on automotive equipment, components and sub systems. Demonstrated experience and thorough knowledge of automotive equipment mechanics including electrical systems, brake and engine overhaul procedures. Working knowledge of applicable State and Federal regulations pertaining to automotive and other power-driven equipment; including applicable smog regulations. Excellent organizational skills necessary to independently prioritize workload and meet established deadlines. Ability to effectively reference, interpret and apply information disseminated from mechanical, electrical and other relevant automotive schematics. Basic computer skills to add information to computerized vehicle maintenance programs, check email and other relative information available through the Internet. Ability to promote positive public relations in a customer and safety-driven environment. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to read, write and follow oral instruction in English. Knowledge of safety practices related to an automotive repair operation. Ability to model and advocate UCSD Principles of Community. SPECIAL CONDITIONS Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results. Required to hold valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program. Annual Full Pay Range: $61,450 - $83,562 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $29.43 - $40.02
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
