Job Description

The Student Conservation Association is seeking an AmeriCorps Cultural Resources Management Member for a position at Navajo National Monument in Shonto, AZ. The role involves hands-on conservation tasks such as archaeological site assessments and preservation work, providing job-skills training to youth aged 18-24. The position runs from June to October 2026, requiring 40 hours of work per week in rugged terrain and outdoor environments.

Position Summary





The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.





This position is part of SCA's National Direct Opportunity Youth Service Initiative (OYSI). OYSI is a partnership between SCA, AmeriCorps, and The Corps Network which engages youth ages 18–24 who are disconnected from school or work in hands-on conservation service that protect and restore public lands, waters, and recreation resources nationwide. The program provides job-skills training, support, and career pathways in environmental stewardship and infrastructure fields, while prioritizing placements for participants who meet opportunity-youth eligibility criteria





The individual in this position will be trained to assist with various NPS cultural resource management tasks at Navajo National Monument located in Shonto, Arizona, in the park's cultural resources division. Supervision will be provided by the park archeologist and working with the seasonal NPS archeological technician. The member will be trained, supervised, and engage in several different projects – archeological site assessments, project monitoring, preservation fieldwork, documentation, backcountry hiking, and 4X4 vehicle operation in rugged terrain.





Member Impact





The member will play a pivotal role in working with the Cultural Resources division assisting with a variety of tasks related to archaeological site condition assessments, facilities project monitoring, historic site improvements, and more. They will promote the mission of the park through their service and will play a key role in ensuring the repair and protection of important prehistoric and historic structures. This work is critical to Navajo National Monument.

A minimum 30-minute lunch break is required each service day. Lunch periods do not count toward the required minimum service hours.

Essential Functions





The duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, archaeological site condition assessments in backcountry environments, site reconnaissance in remote backcountry environments in rugged terrain, facilities project monitoring, public presentations with topics of their choosing derived from the park's cultural or natural resources, minor repairs and preservation treatments to prehistoric and historic structures and assets, data entry, narrative summaries for reports. Fieldwork will be conducted during summer-fall months typically in rugged terrain in extreme weather (hot, dry, rain, thunderstorms, unless avoided) in remote backcountry environments, hiking long distances with a





Additional training and service opportunities may include various safety trainings, UTV operation, front desk outreach in the park's Visitor Center, monthly museum monitoring tasks, and NPS systems will be provided. The goal will be for the park archeologist to provide park orientation and training at Navajo National Monument, learning the NPS mission, park operations, and potential career pathways, and assist the park archeologist in accomplishing day-to-day tasks.





Marginal Functions





Ancillary duties related to, but not limited to, cultural resource management projects, outreach and education, and facilities projects that maintain historic assets.





Required Qualifications





AmeriCorps Eligibility Requirements:





This position is part of a specialized SCA AmeriCorps program and if you are selected, you will be serving as an SCA AmeriCorps member. To be eligible for this position you must meet these basic AmeriCorps Eligibility Requirements:





. Being a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States;


. Being at least 18 years or older;


. Having a high school diploma or equivalent or actively working to complete;


. Being willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check after acceptance of position, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks.





BA in Anthropology or Indigenous Studies or Resource Management. Required skills and certifications would include current driver's license, computer literacy (office software, such as MS suite - Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher; Adobe Reader, etc.), typing 50 WPM, backcountry hiking and orienteering, 4X4 vehicle operation in rugged terrain, knowledge of archeological methods, site photography, data collection and mapping, field narrative writing.





Preferred Qualifications





GIS, report writing, public speaking, field documentation, resource management skills





Commitment Required





The member is expected to serve for 20 weeks with an average of around 40 hours per week of service.





Living Accommodations





Government housing is available for rent. Housing will be a bunkhouse situation in a 3-bedroom, single-story, historic residence located 200 yards from the office. House size is est. 1200 sq ft total with communal kitchen and living room, and 1-1/2 bathrooms shared among occupants. Washer and dryer provided. One person per bedroom. Paid utilities. Rent amount varies slightly between two bunkhouses but will not exceed $553.00/mth. Payroll deducted monthly rent payments. Occupants are expected to perform routine housekeeping of residence. A check-in and check-out procedure will be conducted by permanent park maintenance staff for tenants. Tenant will be billed for damages. Park does not provide Wi-Fi for tenants who are encouraged to provide their own hotspot for personal use after service hours. Closest town is Kayenta, AZ, 29 miles from the park via paved highways, and provides basic amenities (gas stations, grocery store, hardware store, post office, several fast-food restaurants, Wells Fargo bank branch, motels, emergency medical services, if needed). Flagstaff, Arizona, is a 2-1/4-hour drive from the park to the southwest. Cortez, Colorado, is a 2-1/4-hour drive from the park to the east.

. Amount of Living Allowance member will receive: $700/week


. $1,000/monthly housing allowance


. Amount of the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award being offered for successful completion of the member term of service: $2,817.14


. All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.


. Eligible for Federal Student Loan forbearance and interest payment deferment through AmeriCorps for qualifying student loans
