Job Description

The Student Conservation Association is hiring a General Recreation Crew Member for a Forest Service district in Girdwood, Alaska, from June 1 to August 22, 2026. The role involves maintaining trails, recreation sites, and cabins in various weather conditions, working in the field with tools. Participants will receive bunkhouse accommodations and a living allowance. Applicants must be aged 16-30 or veterans aged 35 or younger.
Position Summary


This is an exciting multi-discipline position working for a Forest Service district recreation program in Girdwood, Alaska. The position will include assisting recreation crews and staff in maintenance and repairing recreation sites, trails, and remote cabins. All duties are performed in the field using a variety of power and non-power tools including shovels, Pulaski, rock bars, chainsaws, and brush cutters.





This is a multi-discipline position working for a Forest Service district recreation program. Placements need to bring a positive attitude, willingness to work in inclement (wet) weather, long days and spiked out in remote field camps. The position will include interdisciplinary collaboration while working to safely maintain and manage recreation infrastructure in a remote Alaskan community.

Key Duties and Responsibilities


The SCA crew members will work alongside the Glacier Ranger District Recreation Crew. They will report to the District Recreation Operations Supervisor. The combined crew will work together to accomplish the following areas of work:


· Trail maintenance and reconstruction


· Cabin maintenance and improvement


· Maintain and clean developed recreation areas


· Conduct work in both front and backcountry settings


Aside from normal clothing and boots, all necessary field and safety gear will be provided by the Forest Service.





Marginal Duties


Reporting accomplished work to SCA in output logs.





Required Qualifications


Placements will need to bring a positive attitude, willingness to work in inclement (wet) weather, long days and spiked out in remote field camps.





This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Experience using hand tools.

40 per week





Living Accommodations


Bunkhouse housing will be provided. Bunkhouse facility is on the district office compound, right next door to where placements will report to work each day. Bunkhouse accommodations include kitchen facilities with all the pots/pans/utensils provided; shared living room space with TV; multiple bathrooms/showers; bedding such as linens/pillow/comforter can be provided as well.





Bunkhouse is located within walkingbiking distance to stores, restaurants, town center, and Alyeska Ski Resort. A bike path runs right behind the bunkhouse and connects all of town (a number of bikes are available for bunkhouse residents to use). Additionally hiking trails, including a portion of the Iditarod National Historic Trail, are within walking distance of the bunkhouse.





Compensation


$450/week living allowance


$310/month housing stipend for USFS housing


$1300 one-time roundtrip travel stipend


$500 duty-related reimbursements


All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
