Hydrologist, Staff/Technical – State of Idaho

Join the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR) and impact water management in Idaho. This position is located at the State Office in Boise.
Key Responsibilities
• Collect, manage, and analyze hydrologic data.
• Conduct hydrologic studies and evaluate basin or source‑specific water supply and demand.
• Review and analyze technical reports related to water resource allocation and administration.
• Support water masters and water districts ensuring proper distribution of water.
• Measure water flow rates, volumes, and levels, and evaluate distribution and measurement methods.
• For Technical level: review and analyze reports applying specialized knowledge, plan and implement studies, provide guidance and supervision, mentor staff, coordinate data collection and management, supervise tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
• Strong knowledge of hydrology principles, surface water flow, climate, evapotranspiration, water yield, and surface‑groundwater relationships.
• Applied statistics related to hydrology.
• College degree in a physical science such as hydrology, hydrogeology, geology, water resources, environmental science, geophysics, soils, or engineering plus either (a) at least two one‑semester college courses in hydrology or hydrogeology, or (b) at least one year of directly related experience.
Desired Qualifications
• Knowledge of water resource management.
• Experience in natural resource data collection, management, and analysis.
• Computer applications, programming (C#, Visual Basic, R, Python), GIS.
• Knowledge of measuring and monitoring water flows in conduits.
• Experience with state and federal water allocation laws and regulations.
• Leadership and project management experience.
