The State of Michigan is hiring a Forest Fire Officer (7-E9, 10) in Shelby, MI, responsible for forest fire suppression, prevention, and detection. Duties include incident command on wildfires, equipment maintenance, prescribed burns, and public engagement. The role also involves land management activities like timber sale preparation. Candidates need relevant experience and education in fire or natural resources. This position requires onsite work and is not remote.
Forest Fire Officer 7‑E9 This position assists in the suppression, prevention, and detection of forest fires within the protection area. Employee will conduct activities designed to protect and maintain forestlands, their resources, and structures for environmental, economic, and recreational purposes. Fire program duties include serving as incident commander on wildfires, maintaining equipment and inspecting for safe operation, assisting in prescribed burns, and training other department and agency staff. Employee often works with the public and other agencies on fire prevention and suppression activities. Employee will assist in land management activities such as timber sale preparation and/or administration, forest cultivation (site preparation/planting), infrastructure maintenance, and various other types of land use. Position Description Forest Fire Officer 10 This position serves as the recognized resource solely responsible for fire and other programs within the Oceana Field Office area. This would include facility and infrastructure (roads and bridge) responsibilities within the geographic area as well. The purpose of the position is to provide protection to the public and private land from wildfire. Duties include, but are not limited to, fire and prescribed fire planning, fire prevention and suppression, maintenance and inspection of department equipment and participation in forestry and land management activities such as timber sale preparation, reforestation, forest health and land use activities as assigned. Much of the work involves public and partnership interactions. While being directly responsible for the facility management, safety, and program implementation within a specific protection area, this position will be assigned work throughout the Plainwell Unit and potentially statewide. Position Description Education Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school. Experience Forest Fire Officer 7 Work experience fighting fires, performing fire suppression, and/or performing prescribed burns as a member of a state, county, township, municipal, federal or military fire department, natural resources agency, or private wildland firefighter crew with completion of the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council's Fire Fighter I, equivalent military training course, or National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Fire Fighter 2 qualification. Forest Fire Officer 8 One year of experience equivalent to a Forest Fire Officer 7 and division in‑service training. Forest Fire Officer E9 Two years as a Forest Fire Officer, including one year equivalent to a Forest Fire Officer 8 and division in‑service training. Forest Fire Officer 10 Three years as a Forest Fire Officer, including one year equivalent to a Forest Fire Officer E9 and division in‑service training. Forest Fire Officer 7 Two years of college with 15 semester (23 term) credits in natural resources technology, fire technology, forest technology, or wildlife technology may be substituted for the experience requirement. Employee is required to pass a physical exam and fitness test upon hire and continue to pass the physical fitness test annually to remain employed.
