Job Description

Apex Engineering Group Inc is seeking an Environmental Planning Lead, flexible to work from any office or remotely within 100 miles of their ND offices. The role involves preparing NEPA documentation, engaging in business development, and collaborating on environmental projects. Candidates should have a relevant degree and at least 5 years of experience in environmental planning, particularly with NEPA processes. Travel for meetings may be required.
Office Location: Any Apex Office (Fargo, Bismarck, Dickinson, Minot, ND or Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud, Minnetonka, MN) / Remote Location also considered

The position offers flexibility and can be performed from any of our Apex offices or remotely within 100 miles of our ND Offices. The selected candidate will be expected to attend key business, client, and project-related meetings in person, including personnel meetings if they are a direct supervisor. This role reports directly to the Transportation Sector Leader and is regarded as a strategic hire that offers the chance to build and expand the environmental team, enhancing service offerings to both public and private clients. Key responsibilities include engaging in technical work for transportation and water projects that require NEPA documentation, assessments of threatened and endangered species, public agency coordination, permitting, and wetland delineation/mitigation.

Essential Tasks and Duties:

Prepare NEPA documentation for projects, including Environmental Assessments, Environmental Impact Statements, and Categorical Exclusions.Engage in business development and marketing efforts concerning environmental work with existing and potential clients.Collaborate with project managers and market leaders to prepare compelling technical proposals for project pursuits.Participate in project interviews that emphasize the necessity for environmental planning.Prepare the necessary permits related to Clean Water Act Sections 10/404 (Corps) and 401 Water Quality Certifications, as well as USFWS Section 7 Consultation.Review field and office wetland delineations and jurisdictional determinations from agencies.Participate in meetings and seminars relevant to the transportation team, management, and company-wide staff.Assist in developing budgets for planning-related work.Recruit and hire other environmental staff, as needed and approved by the Sector Leader.Demonstrate effective communication skills with the public in settings such as public meetings and informational events.Exhibit initiative in independent thinking and make rational judgment calls.Adhere to the company employee handbook and mandated safety protocols.Perform responsibilities meticulously, legally, and ethically with strong attention to detail.Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.Participate in professional organizations and engage in community leadership programs.Willingness to travel and stay overnight as required, with potential for overtime around submission deadlines.Other duties as assigned.Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in planning, natural resource management, environmental science, biological science, ecology, or a related field.5+ years of experience in environmental planning and permitting, demonstrating knowledge in NEPA document preparation.Preferred experience with transportation projects and public agencies in North Dakota and Minnesota.Specialized experience in authoring Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements is highly desirable.Proficiency in Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.Detail-oriented, self-motivated, with strong interpersonal and organizational abilities.A valid driver's license is required or the ability to obtain one.Physical Requirements:Capability to operate a computer in standard ergonomic office conditions.Occasional outdoor work may be required.Ability to lift and move up to 10 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 50 pounds.Able to work scheduled hours in the office or on-site for projects.Success in this job requires fulfilling each essential duty satisfactorily; reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.Benefits:
