The role involves providing engineering support for capital and repair projects, inventory management, and monitoring composting operations. Candidates must be current engineering students in the Central Valley with strong communication and problem-solving skills. This position is on-site and not remote.

Summer 2026 The Sanitation districts are currently recruiting to fill an Hourly Engineering Student Worker position at Tulare Lake Compost in Kettleman City, CA.

The Sanitation Districts are a non-civil services public agency with over 1,700 employees. Tulare Lake Compost (TLC) is a state-of-the-art, 175-acre facility located near Kettleman City in Kings County, California. At the facility, an eco-friendly process is used to combine agricultural green wastes from the Central Valley with biosolids from Los Angeles County to create an optimal mixture for composting. The facility currently has the capacity to transform up to 100,000 wet tons per year (wtpy) of anaerobically digested and dewatered biosolids into valuable, nutrient rich, Class A Exceptional Quality compost. TLC is owned and operated by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County as part of their diversified biosolids management program.

THE OPPORTUNITY:
The goal of this internship is to provide a student with opportunities to enhance his/her education through the practical application of his/her skills.

The selected Student Worker will receive supervision from the Compost Facility Superintendent or delegate at Tulare Lake Compost near Kettleman City and/or Whittier. The student will provide engineering support for facility capital and repair projects; the procurement of materials, parts, and equipment; the inventory management of tools and spare parts; the implementation of a preventative maintenance program; monitoring of the composting process and facility operations; and, as needed, field support; and, clerical support in the management of the office.

Please note that this recruitment process will only be used to fill the position at Tulare Lake Compost near Kettleman City. Eligible candidates for this internship are current students enrolled in a college level Engineering program in the Central Valley, who are actively pursuing an engineering curriculum with the career objective of working as a professional engineer, who possess solid written and oral communication skills, familiarity with Microsoft Office software, including Excel and Word, solid math skills, and logical thinking/problem solving ability.

The strongest candidates will: have excellent written and oral communication skills; have experience working in construction, facility operations or agricultural operations; demonstrate fluency in Word and Excel; have strong problem-solving skills and logical thinking; be self-motivated; be capable of working independently and with a variety of personnel including blue collar staff, engineers, farmers, vendors and contractors.Application Process:Only online applications will be accepted.
