Wetland/Upland Specialist – Restoration Team

Ducks Unlimited Canada is hiring a Wetland/Upland Specialist for their Restoration Team in a full-time, fixed-term role lasting approximately 16 months. The position involves working in both field and office settings to lead restoration and green infrastructure projects, advising clients on environmental sustainability. Candidates should have a B.Sc. in a related field and at least 3 years of relevant experience. The job is hybrid, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Position Details: Full Time Fixed Term position (approx. 16 months)


Salary: Starting at $54,300 (based on a 35-hour work week and commensurate with individual education and experience, as it relates to the position).

What You Will Do


The Restoration Team is DUC’s environmental consulting team and is Canada’s most experienced provider of naturalized stormwater system design, restoration, and management services. Working alongside a multidisciplinary team of ecologists, engineers, biologists, and restoration practitioners, you’ll help deliver innovative, science-based solutions for municipalities, industry, Indigenous communities, and government agencies across the prairie provinces.


In this role, your key responsibilities include but are not limited to:


Work both in the field and in the office, building positive relationships internally with DUC’s multidisciplinary team and externally with clients, regulators, and project partners.
Lead and support restoration and green infrastructure projects while working closely with full-time and seasonal staff.
Advise clients on environmental sustainability, restoration planning, ecological risk, project implementation, and regulatory approval requirements. Success in this role requires strong leadership, critical thinking, organization, project management, technical communication, and sound ecological judgement, supported by strong field experience and environmental expertise.
Requirements


B.Sc. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental sciences, or a related discipline is preferred; an M.Sc. is considered an asset.
A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience planning, coordinating, and leading ecological field projects; a focus on wetland ecology and restoration is an asset.
Knowledge


Demonstrated ability to interpret ecological data and monitoring results and translate findings into practical, evidence-based recommendations.
Excellent technical report writing skills, with the ability to communicate methods, results, and interpretation, and recommendations to a variety of audiences.
Experience preparing proposals, project budgets, and client deliverables.
Understanding of environmental legislation, guidelines and standards, including wetland policies in western Canada.
Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Strong verbal communication and presentation skills.
Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality technical work.
Strong field botany skills, including vegetation identification and plant community assessments.
Assets


Excellent analytical skills, including experience using statistical software such as R for ecological statistics, data analysis, and visualization are considered an asset
Experience with the design and delivery of green infrastructure projects (e.g., naturalized stormwater system, treatment wetlands and wetland restoration) is considered an asset.
Experience with ArcGIS, CAD, and spatial data analysis is considered an asset.
Professional designation (P.Biol. or equivalent), or eligibility to obtain one, is considered an asset.
Experience in an ecological consulting environment is considered an asset.
