A*STAR RESEARCH ENTITIES seeks a Scientist/Senior Scientist for Sustainable Manufacturing Processes, focusing on Energy Storage Systems using second-life EV batteries. Responsibilities include leading research, system design, and AI/ML analytics for battery-based ESS. Candidates should have expertise in lithium-ion systems, ESS design, and relevant programming skills. The role requires collaboration with teams to develop industry-ready solutions and ensure compliance with standards.
About the roleWe are looking for a highly motivated Scientist or Senior Scientist to lead research, innovation, and deployment of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) that use repurposed second‑life EV batteries. The role blends battery science, ESS/BMS engineering, and AI/ML analytics to create safe, scalable, intelligent solutions for real‑world applications.Key responsibilitiesLead research, design, testing and deployment of second‑life battery‑based ESS, including health assessment, grading, system integration and validation.Develop intelligent BMS architectures with SOC/SOH estimation, protection strategies, fault diagnostics and scalable control algorithms.Design system‑level ESS architecture covering electrical configuration, thermal management, PCS/EMS interfacing, safety compliance and performance optimisation.Drive AI/ML‑based predictive analytics, lifecycle modelling and data‑driven approaches to improve reliability and safety.Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and industry partners to translate research into high‑TRL, industry‑ready solutions.Support standards‑aligned processes for second‑life battery certification, characterisation and system validation.Required profileStrong expertise in lithium‑ion battery systems and energy storage technologies.Experience in ESS system design, power electronics, battery modelling or BMS development.Hands‑on experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Python‑based modelling or embedded systems development.Track record of scientific publications, patents or technology commercialisation.Ability to translate research into deployable, high‑TRL prototypes.Required skillsLithium‑ion battery systemsEnergy storage systemsPower electronicsBattery modellingBattery Management System (BMS) developmentSOC/SOH estimationBattery degradation analysisSystem integrationEnergy Management System (EMS)Power Conversion System (PCS)Grid‑connected systemsBattery safety analysisCompliance standardsMATLAB/SimulinkPythonEmbedded systems developmentAI/MLPredictive analyticsLifecycle modelling
