Energy Studies InstituteThe Energy Studies Institute (ESI) is a research institute at the National University of Singapore seeking to advance the understanding of energy policy issues by conducting independent research and analysis. We are looking for researchers to join a multi-disciplinary team carrying out research projects on a range of energy issues that are of concern to Singapore and the region.
The Institute is looking to recruit a researcher with expertise in energy and climate change policy at the rank of Research Fellow. The appointed staff will operate under the responsibility of the Institute Head and work closely with all members across each of the institute’s divisions. Candidates are expected to be highly familiar with i) climate change and decarbonisation issues and ii) quantitative or qualitative analysis methods. An understanding of Singapore's energy and economic system and local work experience is desirable.
Job DescriptionThe specific area of work will depend on the institute’s priorities at any given point in time. In the near term, to support ongoing research within the institute, the appointed candidate will be expected to contribute to the analysis of various energy transition and decarbonisation strategies. Examples of priority areas include:
Evaluating public awareness of and attitudes towards energy transition;Estimating willingness to pay (WTP) for low-carbon options;Conducting comparative analysis of the governments’ strategies to support energy transition, including electricity market reform, renewable energy deployment, and public communication of policy;Assessing the impacts of policies and green/climate finance instruments on energy transition.This list is not exhaustive. Moreover, at any given point in time, the institute undertakes multiple projects in parallel, and opportunities will exist to participate in a variety of workstreams that align with your interests.
Job RequirementsPossess a PhD degree in economics, public policy, sociology, finance, or other related fields, with specific application to energy, environmental or climate issues.Relevant work experience of a minimum 2 years, preferably in academia, consulting or policy review and formulation.Econometric methods for causal inferenceSurvey design and analysisEconomic valuation techniquesQualitative comparative analysis (QCA) and process tracingSystem dynamicsElectricity marketRenewable energyCarbon pricing and carbon marketsGreen/climate/transition financeRelevant practical experience in industry or government agencies in the area of energy and environment would be valuable.Track record of publications in reputable journals would be an advantage.Able to work independently and as part of a team.Have a strong written and oral command of the English language, as the applicants are required to write academic papers and do presentation in international conferences.
