Cornell University is hiring a Field Assistant III - Aquatic Invasive Species Strike Team Technician to monitor and manage aquatic invasive species in New York State. Overview:
The Field Assistant III - Aquatic Invasive Species Strike Team Technician will work as a member of the New York State Water Resources Institute (NYSWRI) and the Invasive Species Coordination Section (ISCS) of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Lands and Forests to monitor and control aquatic invasive species in New York State. The successful candidate will work throughout NYSDEC Region 6, based out of the NYS DEC Region 6 Brownville Maintenance Center in Dexter, New York. Responsibilities:
• Work with the Region 6 AIS Coordinator on multiple aquatic invasive species monitoring and control projects
• Conduct fieldwork, including wading and snorkeling, to collect and identify aquatic invasive species
• Assist in the implementation of control and management projects for aquatic invasive species
• Collaborate with state and federal agencies, academia, conservation organizations, and the public to coordinate efforts to prevent, detect, and manage aquatic invasive species
• Perform research underwater (wading and snorkeling) to collect data on aquatic invasive species
• Work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team
• Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and stakeholders
• *Qualifications:**
• College courses in ecology, biology, natural resources management, or related field with 1+ years of experience working with aquatic invasive species management or other aquatic-based field work, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
• Strong interest in aquatic invasive species management
• Ability to be comfortable with insects that bite and sting and animal encounters, including snakes (rare), spiders, and other aquatic insects and invertebrates
• Visual concentration, attention to detail, and manual dexterity are required
• Must be able to swim short distances unassisted
• Ability to perform research underwater (wading and snorkeling)
• Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather
• Ability to physically work in field locations that can be difficult to access
• Must be able to navigate uneven terrain, hills, etc. * Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
