Job Description

The Environmental Specialist 2 position at Ohio's Division of Materials and Waste Management in Dayton, KY, involves conducting compliance inspections of waste management facilities, reviewing technical documents, and providing outreach and assistance to health districts and the public. Candidates should have relevant experience or a degree in environmental science or related fields. The role requires travel around Ohio and is not a remote position.
What We Need YOU To Do:

We are looking for a motivated person with a passion for the environment to join our Division of Materials and Waste Management (DMWM), a nationally recognized leader in traditional and innovative waste materials management, at our Southwest District Office in Dayton.

Interested in traveling around Ohio to protect our environment?

In this position, you’ll ensure Ohio’s waste management facilities are constructed and operated in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. This includes traveling to waste disposal sites to conduct compliance inspections and investigate complaints. In cases where enforcement is necessary, you’ll develop strategies for bringing facilities back into compliance.

When not in the field, you’ll review technical documents and prepare reports pertaining to existing and proposed DMWM facilities. You’ll also review and evaluate waste management programs and plans for local health districts to determine their compliance with state standards.

We’ll lean on your subject knowledge and customer service skills to provide effective outreach, technical assistance, and education on proper waste management rules and operations to the regulated community, local officials, health departments, and the public.

12 mos. exp. as Environmental Specialist 1, 85861.OR 4 yrs. trg. or 4 yrs. exp. in position involving engineering or chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, geology or hydrogeology &/or other comparable physical or health science field &/or mathematics which included responsibility for conducting compliance monitoring surveys &/or inspections/reviews or investigations, or review of permit applications relative to oil & gas well operations or injection, annular disposal & saltwater injection wells & enhanced recovery projects or coal mining, or solid/hazardous waste sites or industrial & municipal wastewater dischargers, or collecting, compiling & preparing various environmental assessments, evaluations, reports & related documents. Training & experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.OR baccalaureate degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, earth science &/or urban & regional planning, geology or other comparable physical or health science fields, with training to be commensurate with duties to be assigned.Job Skills: Environmental Services, Engineering, Public Relations, Facilities Maintenance & Inspection, Planning and Development, Technical Writing, Equipment Operations, Public Speaking, Customer Focus

Must obtain registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training or Registered Environmental Health Specialist in accordance with Section 3776.11 of the Ohio Revised Code from the Ohio Department of Health within six months of the initial date of employment. Failure to attain registration may result in dismissal.
