About the position

Moffatt & Nichol is seeking a Marine Sediment Specialist (Scientist or Engineer) to join our Environmental Team in Southern California. This position is pivotal in supporting national and regional projects focused on large complex waterfront infrastructure. The ideal candidate will provide technical leadership and staff oversight, design field investigations, lead sediment evaluations, analyze field and laboratory data, and develop comprehensive finding reports. The role is primarily office-based, with some site visits required, which may involve navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. The successful candidate will work closely with clients, which may include federal and state agencies, local municipalities, and major ports and terminals across the United States, all without the need for extensive travel. As part of our Environmental Team, you will collaborate with other professionals to ensure the delivery of high-quality data reports and effective client relations. You will be responsible for writing work plans and reports, conducting statistical analyses of complex datasets, and interpreting environmental data, including chemistry in water, sediment, and tissue. Additionally, you will design sediment management plans and assist in preparing cost proposals and statements of qualifications. This role requires a strong foundation in environmental science or engineering, with a focus on water and sediment quality, and the ability to manage project scopes, schedules, and budgets effectively.

Responsibilities
• Direct and supervise technical assignments and manage entire projects or specific elements of projects.

• Write work plans and reports, completing statistical analysis of complex datasets.
,
• Analyze and interpret environmental data, including chemistry in water, sediment, and tissue.
,
• Write reports and other technical submittals, potentially leading or directing sampling and other environmental efforts in the field for sediment and water quality collection.
,
• Design sediment management plans.
,
• Develop and maintain effective client relations.
,
• Assist in the preparation of cost proposals and statements of qualifications.

Requirements
• Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Toxicology, or related science for scientist position; required.
,
• Bachelor's Degree in Environmental or Civil Engineering for engineer position.
,
• Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in CA or the ability to obtain via reciprocity within 6 months of hire for Engineering position; required.
,
• 5-10 years of related environmental consulting experience; required.
,
• Strong relationship building and technical skills needed to help deliver quality data reports to clients.
,
• In-depth demonstrated knowledge in all areas of water and sediment quality.
,
• Familiarity with chemical fate and transport, Clean Water Act compliance, NPDES permitting, TMDLs, and toxicology is a plus.

• Experience with water quality issues and sediment contamination concerns.

• Risk Assessment experience.
,
• Strong oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to prepare reports and proposals.
,
• Working knowledge of software including statistical software, databases, GIS, and MS Office applications.
,
• Ability to manage scopes, schedules, and budgets for projects and work tasks.
,
• Strong project management and client skills with proven connections to the California marketplace is highly preferred.
,
• Proven proficiency at marketing, managing projects, and managing/mentoring junior scientists.

Benefits
• Base salary range of $90,000 to $135,000 based on experience and qualifications.
