Job Description

Water Environment Consultants is seeking an entry-level Staff Engineer/Scientist in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, or Florida. Candidates should have a Master's or Bachelor's degree in a related field and preferably some experience. Responsibilities include project work, field studies, hydrologic analyses, and client communication. WEC is actively looking for an entry-level engineer or scientist in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia or Florida.


Qualifications



Master of Science or Engineering (or Bachelor of Science with commensurate experience) in a related practice area
Technical knowledge within the water resources field
(Preferred) One to two years of experience (preferably consulting)

Responsibilities



Complete assigned project work on schedule and within the project budget
Perform calculations, modeling, etc. as directed
Participate in field studies using current meters, tide gages, water quality sondes and other field equipment as necessary (primarily local) to meet the needs of the position
Learn about specific pieces of equipment and how to run them during field work.
Learn federal and state (SC, NC or GA) and regulatory programs, policies, etc.
Actively participate (incl. local/state travel) in at least one professional society and build local and state relationships related to WEC’s services and client sectors.

Join and attend state and local-level WEASC, ASCE, etc. meetings
Make (limited) presentations for business development



Compose client letters, project reports, etc. with a clear, concise writing style (WEC’s writing guidelines will be provided)
Strive toward professional registration/certification
Participate in staff recruitment through networking
Understand WEC’s mission statement and how to best relay it to others

Job-Specific Responsibilities



Perform hydrologic & hydraulic (H&H) analyses
Conduct H&H modeling with 2D HEC-RAS
Learn and apply new modeling tools to support project work
Assist with flood hazard evaluations, including base flood conditions, project impacts, and alternative analyses
Knowledge of and/or desire to develop understanding of H&H processes such as floodplain/watershed drainage, storage, conveyance, water quantity and quality
Prepare FEMA Letter of Map Change (LOMC) applications in coastal and/or riverine environments
Review, process, and incorporate topographic, bathymetric, LiDAR, survey, and GIS datasets into engineering models and analyses
Prepare technical reports, tables, and figures that clearly describe methods and results
Apply and continue to learn local ordinances as they relate to floodplain development and permitting

Preferred Qualifications



Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient in MS Office Suite
Experience with numerical modeling and GIS software
Familiarity with FEMA analyses and mapping products
