Job Description

Hawaiian Electric is hiring a Senior Technical Engineer in Hawaii to provide expertise in power quality and control systems. Responsibilities include project management, customer consultations, site assessments, and the implementation of technologies to improve customer operations. The role involves collaboration with various departments and stakeholders to enhance power quality programs and services for commercial, governmental, and residential customers.

They are seeking a Senior Technical Engineer to serve as a technical resource in power quality and control systems, providing consultation and project management for customer end-use technologies.


Responsibilities

Serves as a technical resource in the areas of power quality, power systems, control systems, commercial electro-technologies, data acquisition and instrumentation, and the optimization of customer end-use technologiesPrepares customer systems site assessments, project proposals and financial analyses, and acts as project engineer/construction manager for Hawaiian Electric power quality and efficient customer end-use technologies programs/projects in the commercial, governmental, and residential sectorsPerforms customer technology applications research, investigation, planning and implementation working closely with key customer accounts and keeping in close contact with and effectively utilizing EPRI and EPRI resourcesProvides consultation services to major commercial, industrial, and residential customers, with a focus on resolving customer issues related to power quality; efficient customer end-use technologies including equipment selection/sizing, economic feasibility, maintenance and identifying and solving operational issues; customer demand reduction and power factor optimization strategies; and demand response integration opportunitiesSupports, develops, implements, and plans various Power Quality programs and services (both commercial and residential), including onsite customer monitoring, and educational outreach, including scheduling and presenting customer power quality and end-use technologies workshopsContinues the active co-development with EPRI and the Grid Power Alliance of the Open PQ Dashboard to improve customer power quality and enhance Hawaiian Electric’s grid modernization effortsConducts field surveys and site inspections to investigate customer equipment, systems and operationsDesigns and installs power quality and data acquisition instrumentation systems and software as necessaryActively advocates/plans the use of new clean energy technologies and electro-technologies that can reduce customer bills and/or improve customer operationsWorks closely with internal partners including engineers, account managers, Risk Management, Customer Service, Legal, and Demand Response Departments to identify, develop and critique new opportunities for customer technology applications, projects and services, as well as investigate, troubleshoot, document, and diagnose customer power quality claims issuesServes as project engineer and construction manager for research, demonstration and development (RD&D), and above-the-line (ATL) and/or below-the-line (BTL) customer systems optimization and power quality projects with new revenue potential for the companyResponsibilities include project scheduling, budget preparation, tracking and maintenance, supervision of outside consultants and contractors, and front-line interface with the customerWorks closely with System Operations and Engineering Departments to integrate and optimize the function, utility and application of Power Quality within the CompanyConducts research and actively pursues applications of electro-technologies such as HVAC&R (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration), lighting, energy storage technologies and systems, power factor correction, voltage dip ride-through devices, harmonic filtering, transient voltage surge protection, advanced data acquisition and control systems, and Internet based data collection, archiving, analytics and visualization, etcKeeps abreast of industry power quality issues/technology, customer technologies, clean energy, energy storage, Internet technologies, and other new technologies that impact customer energy bills, customer operations, and bolsters the company’s role as a trusted energy partner to our key customer accountsParticipates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response
Skills

Electrical or Mechanical engineering degree (Bachelor of Science or Master of Science) from an ABET-accredited college or university is requiredDemonstrates detailed knowledge of the application of engineering theories and principles that are pertinent to the Job ResponsibilitiesThis includes knowledge of electrical power systems (utility and in-building systems), distributed renewable energy generation and energy storage systems, emergency generator systems, power quality, HVAC&R equipment and systems, control systems, data acquisition, and remote communicationsHands-on experience and knowledge of direct digital controls (DDC), HVAC&R equipment (chillers, heat pumps, compressors, pumps, pump packages, control valves, sensors, relays, valves, heat exchangers, materials selection, piping systems design, electrical control and power systems, etc.) is desirableWorking knowledge of marketing and project management principles and concepts usually acquired through marketing and/or engineering experience including services provided by Energy Services CompaniesDetailed knowledge of personal computers and standard software applications such as Microsoft OfficeKnowledge of Autocadä, Visioä, Microstationä, or other CAD software is highly desirableAbility to perform independent research and work in a creative, innovative, and motivated fashionAbility to perform detailed financial analysis using skills usually obtained through completion of Engineering Economics, Capital Investment Courses, or similar courses in collegeMust have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's licenseMust meet the standards for frequent required driving positions consistent with the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policyMust be a self-starter with a clear ability to research, plan, organize, execute, and report on work with little supervisionEffective interpersonal skills with the ability to handle difficult and/or sensitive issues with tact, courtesy, and discretionIn-depth analytical, organizational, planning, and conceptual skills to handle multiple projects, programs, and priorities concurrentlyEffective oral, written, listening and platform skills to communicate with all levels inside and outside of the organizationExtensive (7 or more years) of experience in engineering or a related technical fieldState of Hawaii Professional Engineer (PE) License is desirableAdditional course work in accounting and finance would be desirable
