Summary

Join Woodwell’s 2025 Summer Internship Program as a Cartography Summer Intern. In this role, you will assist in the development of climate change-related maps. The role will focus on visualizing environmental data to communicate the impacts of climate change through compelling and informative cartographic products. This internship offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to meaningful climate communication efforts while developing valuable cartographic and analytical skills.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
• Assist in the design and production of climate change-related maps tailored for various audiences
• Use GIS software to analyze and visualize spatial data
• Research and integrate relevant datasets, including internal and external sources, into maps and data visualizations
• Collaborate with team members to ensure accuracy, clarity, and accessibility of map designs
• Assist in refining cartographic styles and layouts for public communication and scientific presentations
• Create maps and data visualizations for social media, our website, and other communications products
• Deliver a final presentation summarizing key findings and map outputs
• Gain practical experience by working on projects and tasks within research and/or operations
• Network with professionals in field of interest, including mentors, managers and other interns
• Develop and enhance skill sets within chosen scientific and/or operational programs
• Participation and learning of the Center’s scientific interdisciplinaries and operational programs such as staff meetings, employee engagement activities

Must Have the Following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• A strong portfolio demonstrating past work
• Experience with GIS and data visualization software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, Adobe, Blender, etc.)
• Strong attention to detail and an eye for effective map design
• Passion for climate change communication and environmental issues
• If hybrid or remote, must have access to reliable internet/wifi

Qualifications:
• Enrolled in a college program pursuing a degree in Geography, Cartography, GIS, Environmental Science or a related field

Physical Requirements

In the office:
• Ability to tolerate sustained periods of walking, standing, sitting
• Ability to communicate professionally
• Ability to sit for extended periods of time
• Frequent use of Zoom required
• Repetitive movements
• Travel (including to Woodwell main campus at least one time)

Work Environment

The functions of this role are conducted indoors

Hours of Work
• This role is paid on an hourly basis
• Typically, full-time, temporary employees work 40 hours during a Monday through Friday workweek.

Desired Start Date: Monday, June 16, 2025 through August 22, 2025 (90 days maximum)

Classification and Compensation: This is a full-time, temporary, hourly, non-exempt position, the salary range is the minimum wage, determined on state employee works or comes funded by specific program. Internship will not exceed more than 90 days.

Location: Falmouth, Massachusetts Onsite, Hybrid or Remote
