Job Title: Environmental Scientist / Senior Environmental Scientist (Professional) Location: Oahu, Maui, or Hawaii Island Number of Vacancies: 1 Hiring Range: Environmental Scientist: $89,100 – $113,700; Senior Environmental Scientist: $109,900 – $142,600 Overview The Hawaii Enviro Services Department’s Air Quality & Noise Division seeks qualified candidates for the roles of Environmental Scientist or Senior Environmental Scientist. This position involves regulatory, technical, and project management responsibilities related to the environmental compliance and permitting of Hawaiian Electric’s electric utility facilities across the Hawaiian Islands. Responsibilities Design and implement environmental compliance programs, including environmental reviews of facilities to meet regulatory and permit requirements cost‑effectively. Review and interpret existing and proposed regulations, provide training to operating personnel, and assist in tracking legislative changes. Prepare permit applications, testimony, and supporting documentation for projects requiring environmental approval. Coordinate environmental data collection, processing, and validation; ensure timely preparation and submission of reports to regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders. Prepare requests for proposal, evaluate consultant proposals, and manage consultants to ensure timely delivery of quality work products. Contribute to the preparation or review of environmental assessments and impact statements; support environmental stewardship programs. Act as project manager for assigned projects, leading continuous‑improvement initiatives and serving as a role model for process excellence. Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned, including preparedness activities. Basic Qualifications Thorough knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental laws and regulations related to electric utility facilities. Working knowledge of environmental management principles, environmental technologies, and project/program management within the utilities sector. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science, engineering, or public health discipline; graduate degree preferred. Intermediate to advanced proficiency with computer software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases). Experience with company contract management policies and continuous improvement methodologies. State-of-Hawaii driver’s license (or qualifying for one); may require additional certifications (e.g., hazardous material spill response, SCUBA, or air quality specific certifications). Ability to work flexibly in a demanding environment and handle sensitive issues with professionalism. Experience Requirements Environmental Scientist: 3–5 years of technical/regulatory experience in environmental responsibilities for electric utilities. Senior Environmental Scientist: 5–7 years of similar experience with increased leadership responsibilities.
