Dewberry is currently seeking a motivated Environmental Scientist in the Mid-Atlantic region. This position offers the flexibility to be located in our Fairfax, Richmond, or Roanoke, VA offices. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and talented individual, which includes flexible work hours and the ability for part-time telework. This full-time opening will provide the applicant with the opportunity to work as part of a team in all facets of environmental services including wetland science, regulatory permitting, environmental compliance, and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation in the mid-Atlantic region. Typical projects involve private, locality, state, and federal agency clients in the transportation market and environmental permitting for land development projects. The ideal candidate will have 3-7 years of experience, wetlands and waters certifications, ISA Certificated Arborist certification, or equivalent certifications/experience.

• Coordinate and lead field work including wetland delineations, site specific RPA delineation, stream attribute assessments, and Phase I ESAs
• Prepare delineation reports, functional assessments, Jurisdictional Determinations (JD) requests, Perennial Flow Determinations (PFD), Water Quality Impact Assessments (WQIA), and compliance/monitoring reports
• Prepare permit applications (JPA and PCN) under Sections 408/404/401/10 of the Clean Water Act to obtain state and federal permits for impacts to jurisdictional features
• Prepare permit applications under NPDES Section 402 of the Clean Water Act to obtain state and federal permits for land disturbance
• Complete database reviews and background research to support the NEPA document development process and assist in the preparation of NEPA documentation
• Conduct Threatened and Endangered (T&E) species habitat assessments, and inventories, and emergence surveys
• Conduct T&E species database reviews to prepare Section 7 Project Review Packages for consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and coordinate potential Time of Year Restrictions (TOYR) with state and federal regulatory agencies
• Conduct cultural and historic resources database reviews to prepare Section 106 technical reports for consultation with State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPO)
• Conduct hazardous materials database reviews and prepare Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA)
• Coordinate with state, federal, and local regulatory agencies
• Conduct permit and NEPA compliance monitoring during construction
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Forestry, Wildlife Biology, Geology, or a related field with 3-7 years of experience
• An environmental certification including Wetland Professional in Training (WPIT), Professional Wetland Delineator (PWD), Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS), ISA Certified Arborist, or similar certification is preferred.
• Knowledge of Virginia environmental regulations and permitting is preferred
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency in MS Office software
• Proficiency with ArcMap/GIS, AutoCAD and MicroStation is preferred
• Desire to work in a team environment
• Jobs and locations may require overnight travel and ability to walk over uneven terrain while carrying heavy equipment
