Job Description
The Climate Change Scientist position at the Department of Transportation in Humboldt County, CA involves supporting climate change coordination, tracking vulnerable assets, and assisting with project documentation. The role requires strong collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, problem-solving, and maintaining updated inventories of climate-related guidance. While primarily office-based, travel for fieldwork is required, and the position may allow for telework at the discretion of the supervisor.

Under the general direction of the Climate Change Branch Supervisor, the incumbent will function as critical support for the unit. The incumbent will support climate change SHOPP coordination-- including identifying, tracking and reporting on vulnerable assets, tracking and reporting climate adaptation work occurring on D1 projects, and coordinating such efforts with asset management. The incumbent will assist with the Climate Change Considerations section of PID and TIPSIS documents, and the creation of feasibility studies reviewing potential solutions for climate vulnerable assets. The incumbent will work with environmental staff to complete the climate change sections of PEAR document, and to provide technical assistance when analyzing climate impacts projects. The Incumbent may help environmental staff with climate change peer review and should be familiar with District 1 climate change concerns, vulnerability assets and relevant technical reports and guidance documents.
The incumbent will also be responsible for solving new problems with innovate approaches and will remain open to new assignments. Incumbent will keep the unit current on all new climate related guidance, maintain inventories, updated at least quarterly, of all guidance, completed/scoped projects, and potential projects. Work will require the development of strong professional relationships with internal—i.e., major damage, maintenance engineering-- and external stakeholders, and facilitate multiple trainings per year for the unit.
While at their base of operation, employees will work in a climate controlled office under artificial lighting. Incumbent may also be required to travel and work outdoors and may be exposed to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, and/or extreme heat or cold. Periodic travel is required for fieldwork and training. Incumbent may be required to work overtime and may remain in field locations in rural areas without facilities.

Working Conditions

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
New to
State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or
minimum of alternate range when applicable.
Special Requirements
• Possession
of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased
vehicle.
• Education: Possession of a bachelor's or advanced degree with a major in a biological, chemical, physical, or environmental science, soil science, water science, hydrology, agronomy, natural resource science, environmental or public health, physical geography, or a closely related scientific discipline. (Admission to a masters or doctoral degree program in a biological, chemical, physical, or environmental science, soil science, water science, hydrology, agronomy, natural resource science, environmental or public health, physical geography, or a closely related scientific discipline shall be considered to meet these education qualifications.)
