About the position

The Boiler Operator assists the Physical Plant Manager in overseeing and managing the maintenance program at the Oregon State Penitentiary. This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of all Physical Plant systems and equipment necessary to support institutional operations. Duties include performing a wide range of building trades work to maintain and improve facility infrastructure. Key responsibilities include providing preventative maintenance on equipment and buildings; responding to emergency breakdowns; safely shutting down systems when required; maintaining inventory and ordering supplies; and completing general repairs to Physical Plant equipment, structures, systems, and grounds. The position may also assist other maintenance shops as needed. Additionally, the Boiler Operator directs, instructs, and coordinates inmate work crews, ensuring all tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and to established standards. This role requires strict adherence to all Department of Corrections rules and procedures, institutional policies, and administrative directives, with a strong emphasis on maintaining and enforcing security protocols at all times.

Four (4) years of full-time experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position; OR An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.Valid driver’s license.Nice-to-haves

Possesses the ability to train and instruct AIC (Adults in Custody) workers in safe, efficient work practices and proper operation of high-pressure steam boiler systems and equipment.Applies solid mechanical aptitude in the operation, maintenance, and repair of heating plant systems, including steam, water, fuel, and control systems.Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting to ensure reliable operation of boilers, pumps, and associated equipment.Conducts chemical testing and treatment of boiler water, condensate, and makeup water to maintain system efficiency and safety.Maintains accurate records and documentation, including computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) entries, boiler logs, meter readings, and incident reports.Manages inventory effectively by tracking tools, equipment, and materials, and recommending supply needs to support operations.Ensures compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and Department of Corrections policies and procedures at all times.Communicates clearly and works collaboratively with staff to coordinate schedules, cover shifts, and maintain continuous operations.Demonstrates attention to detail by monitoring cleanliness, inspecting work areas, and ensuring all tasks are completed safely and to established standards.Demonstrates strong security awareness by maintaining strict control of keys, tools, and contraband, and by conducting searches to prevent incidents and escapes.Effectively supervises and directs AIC work crews while maintaining discipline, order, and compliance with institutional rules and procedures.Responds to AIC incidents with sound judgment, including the ability to safely apply physical restraints when necessary.Benefits
