About the position
The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is seeking an Environmental Supervisor to oversee field inspections of both public and privately-owned facilities to ensure compliance with health and safety standards as well as environmental laws. This role is critical in maintaining the health and well-being of all Arkansans, as it is governed by state and federal laws and agency policies. The Environmental Supervisor will supervise a medium-sized field inspection staff, which includes responsibilities such as interviewing, hiring, training, determining work assignments, and evaluating the performance of team members. In this position, the supervisor will develop and implement inspection evaluation standards that focus on general sanitary conditions, food and water protection, and pollution control devices. The role also involves directing and monitoring the scheduling of investigations and inspections, reviewing investigation reports, sampling data, and correspondence submitted by field investigators. The supervisor will be responsible for reviewing non-compliance reports and issuing notifications for corrective action according to established inspection procedures and regulations. Additionally, the Environmental Supervisor will conduct and monitor inspections of work performed by private contractors to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. This includes documenting findings and sending letters with inspection reports to contractors or building owners. The supervisor will also direct investigations of complaints related to health issues, hazardous waste, communicable diseases, or environmental pollution, determining citations for violations of applicable laws and regulations. The position requires a commitment to responding to emergencies, as the supervisor will carry a pager or cell phone 24/7/365 and must be available to respond to urgent situations.
Responsibilities
• Supervise a medium-sized field inspection staff by interviewing, hiring, training, determining work assignments, and evaluating performance.

• Develop and implement inspection evaluation standards for general sanitary conditions, food and water protection, and pollution control devices.

• Direct and monitor scheduling of investigations and inspections.

• Review investigation reports, sampling data, and correspondence submitted by field investigators.

• Review non-compliance reports and issue notifications for corrective action according to inspection procedures and regulations.

• Review and verify records required by permit, reporting procedures, and sampling and analytical techniques utilized by permitted facilities.
,
• Conduct and monitor inspections of work performed by private contractors to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, documenting findings and sending letters with inspection reports to contractors/building owners.
,
• Direct investigation of complaints concerning health issues, hazardous waste, communicable disease, or environmental pollution.
,
• Determine citation of violations of state and federal laws and regulations.
,
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or a related field.
,
• Three years of experience in environmental control-related activities, sanitation inspections, or a related field.
,
• Knowledge of state and federal environmental control regulations and investigation standards and procedures.
,
• Knowledge of scientific testing equipment and analytic procedures utilized to determine compliance with regulations.
,
• Ability to plan, organize, train, and oversee the work of subordinates.
,
• Ability to plan, conduct, and monitor on-site scientific inspections, evaluate findings, determine compliance with pollution control regulations, and prepare reports.
,
• Ability to respond to emergency situations and monitor containment and/or removal of pollutants.
,
• Ability to review and evaluate reports or records.
