Job Description

The Water Sanitation and Hygiene Institute is hiring a Soil and Water Conservation Specialist for a 16-month contract in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, India. The role involves conducting assessments, providing technical advice, training farmers, and implementing water conservation practices. Candidates should have a B.Sc. in Agriculture, 1-3 years of relevant experience, and proficiency in Tamil and English. The salary ranges from ₹30,000 to ₹35,000 per month.

About the Role

The WASH Institute is seeking a dedicated Soil and Water Conservation Specialist to lead on-ground agricultural interventions in Rameshwaram. This role is pivotal in helping local farming communities adopt sustainable water management practices, improve crop yields through efficient resource use, and leverage digital tools for climate resilience.

Key Responsibilities

- Baseline Assessment: Conduct comprehensive surveys of current on-farm water conservation practices among local farmers to identify gaps and opportunities.
- Technical Advisory: Develop and suggest site-specific measures to reduce per-yield water usage through improved and modernized farming practices.
- Capacity Building: Organize and facilitate technical training sessions for farmers focused on advanced soil health and water conservation techniques.
- Intervention Design: Identify "champion" farmers to lead pilot projects; design and monitor the implementation of farm-level water conservation infrastructure and methods.
- Digital Integration: Support the rollout of a dedicated mobile application designed to provide farmers with real-time data on local water availability.
- Farmer Training: Provide hands-on training to farmers on how to navigate the mobile application and interpret data to make informed irrigation decisions.

B.Sc. Agriculture from a recognized university.

Experience

1–3 years of relevant experience in agriculture, soil conservation, or rural development.

Language

Full professional proficiency (Speak, Read, Write) in Tamil and English.

Location

Must be willing to be based in and travel within Rameshwaram District.

Preferred Skills

- Solid interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with rural farming communities.
- Ability to translate technical agricultural concepts into practical, easy-to-understand guidance.
- Comfortable using and teaching digital mobile applications and data tools.
- Demonstrated experience in monitoring and evaluation of field-level interventions.
