Job Description

The U.S. Climate Alliance is seeking a Senior Policy Advisor to support governors' offices in advancing electricity sector policy solutions. Responsibilities include providing policy guidance, managing working groups, generating deliverables, and supporting fundraising efforts. About the position

The U.S. Climate Alliance is a bipartisan coalition of governors securing\nAmerica’s net-zero future with state-led, high-impact climate action. The\nAlliance Secretariat helps its member states and territories accelerate climate\naction by providing a broad range of technical, analytical, policy, and capacity\nassistance and resources. It also coordinates engagement with local, federal,\nand international partners to drive durable and impactful solutions across\ngovernment. For more on the Alliance, visit www.usclimatealliance.org.\n\nThe U.S. Climate Alliance seeks a Senior Policy Advisor to support governors’\noffices in the advancement of policy solutions in the electricity sector. This\nposition serves as primary advisor to Alliance members on relevant state and\nfederal policy matters; manages day-to-day efforts of the Electricity Policy\nWorking Group and relevant cohorts, including on nuclear and geothermal energy;\nleads activities of the State Modern Grid Deployment Initiative; provides\nguidance to states in the development and implementation of relevant state-level\npolicies and programs; maintains relationships with sectoral national partners\nin the nonprofit and advocacy communities; tracks sector-based policy actions at\nthe state and federal levels and regularly updates members; advises on and\nsupports sector-based technical assistance projects; and collaborates with the\nAlliance’s federal affairs team to facilitate state engagement on key federal\nrules and actions. They may also be expected to advise on additional policy\nsectors as assigned.\n\nThe Senior Policy Advisor reports to the Policy Director and works as part of a\nbroader team that includes Alliance states, consultants, and external partners.\n\nThe position is based in Washington, D.C., with consideration for remote work in\nthe contiguous United States (hybrid schedule).

Responsibilities

Provide policy guidance to states and track relevant policy developmentsLead and develop multistate working group(s), initiatives, and conveningsGenerate policy option papers, resource guides, letters, communications\nmaterials, and other major Alliance deliverablesShape content and strategy for Alliance-wide meetings, workshops, and eventsSupport fundraising for relevant policy effortsManage relevant grantsPerform other duties as assignedRequirements

Bachelor’s degree with substantial work experience in climate, energy and/or\nenvironment policy. Preference may be given to candidates with a master’s\ndegree7-10 years of professional experience in related policy areas. Extensive\nexperience working with governments required; direct experience working in,\nwith, or around state-level government strongly preferred.Commitment to advancing policy solutions in the U.S. that address climate\nchange, reduce pollution, and increase resilience to climate impactsDemonstrated aptitude for conducting research and analysis, developing\npresentations and briefing memos, and presenting to senior leadersExceptional verbal, written, and in-person communication skillsCritical thinker that can generate products tailored to different audiences\nwithout requiring frequent directionDemonstrated ability to coordinate multi-stakeholder processes to build\nconsensus, maintain trust, and support the achievement of shared goals and\npriorities. Past experience with multistate, national, or international\ncoalitions strongly preferredAdaptability to changing circumstances and eagerness to learn new policy\nareasFamiliarity with relevant U.S. climate-related datasets and toolsProficiency with Microsoft Office suite with demonstrated skill for using and\ndisplaying complex datasets in Microsoft Excel and/or other toolsAbility to work as part of a small team and prioritize multiple competing\npriorities in a fast-paced environmentSelf-motivated with strong ability to find solutions in the face of\nchallengesMaximum flexibility in accepting and professionally executing a range of\ntasksAbility to diplomatically engage diverse counterparts and use personal\ndiscretion in working with sensitive informationAbility to manage competing priorities.Benefits
