The County of Los Angeles is seeking a Senior Physician in Environmental Toxicology to lead evaluations of environmental hazards, provide technical guidance on health outcomes, and manage risk communication during environmental incidents. Responsibilities include coordinating with regulatory agencies, developing emergency response protocols, and overseeing environmental health data analysis. This position requires a licensed physician with expertise in environmental toxicology and is located in Los Angeles, CA.

SPECIAL SALARY INFORMATION:
All person appointed to the position of Senior Physician (Item No. 5456) who have obtained certification by the appropriated American Medical Specialty Board in the specialty to which they are assigned, shall receive an additional compensation of a flat-rate monthly bonus equal to 5.5 percent of the step on the appropriate E Schedule to which they are entitled based upon experience.  Such bonus shall only be given for certification in one specialty.

ABOUT THIS POSITION:
We are pursuing qualified candidates to fill Senior Physician positions within the Department of Public Health. We are looking for licensed physicians that have immediate charge of a small medical section within a larger medical unit of a medical facility or a small program of a medical facility.

Lead evaluation of environmental hazards using advanced expertise in environmental toxicology and exposure assessment, including interpretation of environmental monitoring data, biomonitoring results, and health risk assessments to characterize acute and chronic health risks.

Provide expert technical guidance on environmental exposures and associated health outcomes, including rapid assessment of chemical releases, air and water contamination events, and other environmental incidents to inform public health action.

Direct risk communication and public notification efforts during environmental hazards and emergencies, including developing clear, actionable messaging for the public, media, and stakeholders, and serving as a subject matter expert in briefings, press interactions, and community meetings.

Coordinate with regulatory and partner agencies (e.g., environmental, air quality, and emergency response entities) to align health-based recommendations, support incident response, and ensure integration of public health considerations into regulatory and operational decisions.

Develop and implement protocols, policies, and procedures for environmental emergency response, including incident notification, interagency coordination, and post-event public health follow-up, including epidemiologic investigations and exposure tracking.

Oversee analysis, reporting, and dissemination of environmental health data, ensuring scientific rigor, timeliness, and accessibility of findings to inform policy, regulatory action, and community protection.

Perform administrative and leadership duties, including program planning, and continuous improvement of environmental health response systems, data workflows, and service delivery.


Oversee the maintenance of environmental health records and the preparation of technical reports, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and readiness for public release and interagency use.

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:
Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board* in one or more designated specialties** or equivalent training***.
-AND-
One (1) year of experience in medical practice, post graduate training, teaching or investigative work.
-AND-
Specialty certification* in Medical Toxicology or Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
-or-
Board certification* in Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Medicine or Emergency Medicine including two (2) years of experience in environmental toxicology and exposure assessment within a public health agency or academic setting, including experience in evaluating and responding to environmental hazards and emergency events.

This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications: Experience applying advanced scientific expertise in environmental toxicology and exposure assessment to evaluate environmental hazards and ensure timely dissemination of accurate, actionable information to the public, media, and stakeholders to prevent or reduce adverse health effects.Experience developing and implementing policies and procedures for coordinated response to toxic environmental emergencies, including incident notification, interagency collaboration, and integration with regulatory partners, and conducting follow-up epidemiologic investigations to assess and mitigate population health impacts.Experience conducting and interpreting human health risk assessments, including evaluation of environmental monitoring, biomonitoring, and exposure pathway data to inform public health decision-making.Experience in environmental and medical toxicology, including assessment of acute and chronic health effects associated with chemical, air, water, and soil exposures.Experience leading or supporting environmental health crisis and emergency risk communication, including public notification, media engagement, and development of clear, health-protective guidance during rapidly evolving incidents.Experience applying epidemiological methods in environmental health response, including study design, exposure characterization, and analysis of health outcomes related to environmental hazards.Experience interpreting and integrating environmental science data (e.g., air monitoring, water quality, soil contamination) to support regulatory decision-making, public health guidance, and cross-agency response. Experience in communicating risk to one or more audiences (e.g., public, media, and/or regulatory partners).EXAMINATION CONTENT:

Candidates must meet the requirements to qualify and must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be added on the Eligible List (hiring list).

Passing this examination and being added to the Eligible List does not guarantee an offer of employment.
