Job Description: Rural Health Clinic (RHC) Medical Coder

Position Summary

The Rural Health Clinic (RHC) Medical Coder is responsible for accurate, compliant assignment

of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for services performed in a Rural Health Clinic (RHC)

setting. This role supports compliant encounter billing by coding services across primary care,

preventive medicine, behavioral health, and specialty services while ensuring adherence to

Rural Health Clinic regulations and payer requirements.

The coder applies current CPT, CMS Rural Health Clinic regulations, Official Coding Guidelines,

and industry standard requirements to ensure complete and compliant coding that supports

accurate reimbursement and regulatory compliance.

Core Responsibilities

Coding & Compliance

Assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for:o Primary care E&M services

o Preventive medicine services

o Behavioral health encounters (when applicable)

o Clinic-based procedures within scope

o Care management services (when applicable)

o Medicare Annual Wellness Visits (AWV), Initial Preventive Physical Examinations

(IPPE), and other preventive services

Apply E&M guidelines using MDM and/or time, as appropriate.Ensure accurate assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes supporting Rural HealthClinic encounter billing and reimbursement requirements.

Demonstrate an understanding of Rural Health Clinic encounter methodology, qualifyingvisits, and services excluded from the All-Inclusive Rate (AIR), as applicable.

Accurately capture diagnoses reflecting patient complexity, chronic conditions,preventive services, and social determinants of health when documented.

Identify documentation gaps and missed coding opportunities and initiate compliantprovider queries when clarification is required.

Ensure compliance with NCCI edits, CMS Rural Health Clinic regulations, and applicablepayer requirements

Qualifications

Required

2+ years of professional fee coding experience, including direct Rural Health Clinic (RHC)coding experience.

Active credential: CPC, CCS-P, or equivalent.Strong knowledge of:o Medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology

o E&M coding (2021+ guidelines)

o CMS Rural Health Clinic regulations

o Rural Health Clinic encounter methodology and qualifying visits

o All-Inclusive Rate (AIR) reimbursement methodology

o Preventive services and screening coverage rules

o Medicare and Medicaid payer requirements

o Modifier usage and NCCI edits

Familiarity with Cerner, Epic, eClinicalWorks, or similar EMRs.Compensation: 30,000.00 - 42,768.73 per month
