Job Description

The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission is offering a 10-week full-time internship for graduate students in the energy sector as part of the NARUC Energy Intern Program. The intern will conduct research on utility service maps, collaborate with Commission staff, and prepare a report on their findings. The position is based in Honolulu, HI, but hybrid remote work is allowed. A stipend of $5,000 will be provided.
As part of the 2026 Energy Summer Intern Program sponsored by the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissions (NARUC), the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is seeking a graduate level student interested in the energy sector for a 10-week full-time internship. The selected intern will work at the PUC’s office, located at 465 S. King Street, #103, Honolulu, HI, or as otherwise allowed to hybrid remote work .



The intern will receive a stipend from NARUC while working for the PUC Commission in various areas of utility regulation. NARUC will provide a stipend of $5,000 payable directly to the intern in two installments for a 10-week internship. NARUC requires that the intern prepare a short report at the end of the internship, detailing work activities and accomplishments.



The intern will have the opportunity to collaborate and learn with Commission staff, discuss current issues facing the Commission, and contribute to a project to modernize the way that the Commission maintains utility service maps. The intern will work with various staff of the Commission including those in the Office of Policy and Research and the Mentor. Duties will include, but are not limited to:



1. Conduct initial research into the available external maps that provide visualization of utility assets.



2. Conduct research on filed maps by the utilities as seen in the Commission’s Case and Docket Management System.



3. Participate in meetings with other organizations, state and county agencies or departments, and site visits to review mapping efforts that are ongoing.



4. Prepare a report packet with all research conducted, including any materials that would support a future modernization project.

Qualifications:

The internship is open to rising students currently enrolled in a masters/graduate level program or recently graduated (in the past 12 months). Areas of interest include but are not limited to engineering (electrical, civil, computer, and/or environmental engineering), policy (political science, energy policy, and/or local governmental affairs), planning (urban planning, surveying, and/or cartography), accounting (auditing), or a related field.
