The Managing Consultant, Sustainable Operations at ERM will lead EHS compliance and management projects, helping organizations enhance their EHS programs and mitigate risks. The role involves advising clients on EHS strategy, conducting due diligence, and developing compliance solutions. Responsibilities include project management, client relationship building, business development, and mentoring junior staff. About the position
Managing Consultant, Sustainable Operations will play a pivotal role in helping organizations move beyond basic compliance toward resilient, high-performing EHS programs. This role blends strategy, execution, and client leadership —empowering businesses to proactively manage compliance obligations, mitigate operational risk, strengthen EHS culture, and advance sustainable operations. In tandem, you will lead and support EHS-focused due diligence and integration efforts, while partnering with subject matter experts to deliver practical, compliance-driven solutions across the transaction lifecycle and beyond. Responsibilities
Lead and deliver EHS compliance and management system projects that reduce risk and strengthen regulatory performanceLead and execute EHS due diligence for transactions, identifying material risks, liabilities, and compliance gaps to inform investment decisionsServe as a trusted advisor to clients, shaping EHS strategy and driving long-term program successBuild and expand client relationships, generating repeat business and contributing to regional growthContribute to business development by supporting proposals, client discussions, and expanding M&A services within existing accountsTranslate complex EHS findings into clear, decision-ready insights for clients, including risk prioritization and cost implicationsSupport deal execution through timely, high-quality deliverables that meet fast-paced transaction timelinesAdvise clients on post-close integration strategies, including Day 1 readiness, compliance alignment, and risk mitigation planningCollaborate with technical subject matter experts to evaluate specialized risks (e.g., air, waste, PFAS) and develop actionable recommendationsMentor and develop talent, fostering a high-performing and collaborative team environmentElevate EHS programs from compliance-driven to performance-oriented and sustainability-alignedLead and execute EHS compliance audits, assessments, and corrective actions across client operationsManage and deliver complex due diligence projects (including multi-site portfolios) in accordance with ASTM Phase I standards and global protocolsOversee multiple projects end-to-end, ensuring quality delivery within scope, schedule, and budgetCollaborate with Partners-in-Charge, Project Managers, and global teams to effectively resource and deliver projectsDevelop and implement EHS management systems and regulatory compliance programs (air, water, waste, spill prevention)Provide on-site technical support and compliance expertise at client facilitiesAdvise legal, corporate, and private equity clients on EHS risks, liabilities, and opportunities associated with transactionsPrepare clear, concise reports evaluating environmental liabilities, compliance status, and operational risksDesign and guide corporate EHS strategies aligned with regulatory requirements and client objectivesBuild and strengthen client relationships to drive repeat business and new opportunities; support proposals and business development effortsMentor and develop junior staff, delegate effectively, and foster collaborative team performanceCollaborate across ERM’s global network to share best practices and deliver consistent, high-quality solutionsRequirements
5+ years of experience in EHS compliance, management systems, sustainability programs, and/or transaction advisoryWorking knowledge of ASTM Phase I ESA standards and core business/legal concepts of transactions, with demonstrated interest in M&A workStrong technical expertise in environmental and/or safety disciplines (e.g., air quality, stormwater, SPCC, hazardous waste)Proven project management skills, including oversight of budgets, timelines, and delivery of high-quality technical outcomesDemonstrated leadership ability, including leading initiatives, delegating work, and mentoring junior staffBachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, safety, business, or a related field (or equivalent experience)Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of clear, concise technical reports and client deliverablesHighly organized and adaptable, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and travel up to 30% domesticallyNice-to-haves
