Job Description

ATREE in Bengaluru seeks an Environmental Anthropologist with post-doctoral experience in anthropology, focusing on environmental themes. The role involves leading research projects, mentoring students, and developing courses in conservation and sustainability. Candidates should have a strong publication record and teaching experience. The position emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and community outreach, particularly in contexts affected by climate change and biodiversity loss.
Description


ATREE is seeking motivated and imaginative researchers with post-doctoral (or higher) level experience and background in anthropology, with preferable specialization in environmental anthropology. The anthropology applicant must possess excellent analytical, critical and communication skills. Applicant must be well versed in environmental anthropological research themes and topics including cultural understandings of nature and environment; how political action, religion and globalization shapes human-nature relations; multi-species ethnography; and examining cultural-environmental interactions in the context of climate change and biodiversity loss. Applicants must be familiar with political ecological and environmental justice frameworks.


The researcher must be able to lead and participate in research projects including interdisciplinary ones in the fields of conservation and sustainability. The applicant must possess interests and inclinations to pursue theoretical and grounded/empirical work and demonstrate penchant and sensitivity for diversity and equity. While place based deep insight is valued, the researcher must display interest in asking big questions and perform cross context comparisons. To this extent, establishing global-local linkages is important.


The applicant must also partake in ATREE’s pioneering interdisciplinary PhD and Masters programmes. ATREE requires its faculty to mentor PhD and Masters students.


Successful candidates will



Develop an environmental anthropology research program around conservation and sustainability that has scope for interdisciplinary collaboration. For this, collaboratively raise research grants.
Choose geographical contexts to pursue ethnographic projects in, including broadly, both rural and urban contexts; the cultural contexts for ethnography that ATREE strongly encourages range from forest dependent communities, pastoral communities, small farm communities, middle class town and city consumers, marginal urban migrants, and riverine or deltaic communities.
Design an environmental anthropology course or module for PhD, MSc and certificate programs.
Contribute to existing courses like sociology for conservation and sustainability; conservation issues, ethics and concerns; climate change; and methods courses.
Communicate research through audio-visual media (podcasts, short films, photography, documentaries) and op-eds.
Biophysical change contexts to locate ethnographic work broadly include land use change and climate change in the western and eastern ghats, western coast, eastern Himalayas, western India, and central India.

Qualifications



PhD in anthropology, environmental anthropology
Demonstrated record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals, book(s) and giving presentations at academic conferences.
Undergraduate or Masters teaching experience
Interests or experience in community outreach, especially socially just and sustainable solutioning; and public communicatio
