Aztec Engineering Group is seeking an Environmental Scientist II for their Arizona Hazardous Materials group in Phoenix, AZ. The role involves supporting projects related to hazardous materials, including fieldwork and technical report writing, with potential growth into project management. Candidates should have a relevant degree and at least three years of experience. The position offers a hybrid work schedule and excellent benefits.

Job Description
This role will provide support for ongoing and new projects addressing hazardous materials-related environmental concerns of private and public-sector clients in Arizona, California, and the greater Southwest. Primary duties will initially include fieldwork and technical report writing, but this position will also support project management duties with anticipated growth into the Project Manager position (i.e., scopes of work, proposals and project budgeting, strategy development, and promoting a high level of technical competence in our work products).
Duties:
• Conducting Phase I ESAs, Phase II ESAs, Preliminary Initial Site Assessments (PISAs), and other due diligence-related activities
• Conducting asbestos surveys and lead paint surveys for transportation-related projects, property transactions, and demolition
• Performing fieldwork tasks such as data gathering and sampling activities at sites that include indoor air (IAQ), soil vapor, soil, and groundwater sampling; vapor intrusion assessments; soil borings and sampling, and preparation of borings logs and cross-sections; well installation; groundwater, soil vapor, and soil remediation evaluation; regulatory compliance services; and various permit acquisition
• Management and field oversight of subcontractors, sub-consultants, and vendors (etc., in conformance with the written scope of work and associated agreements)
• Gathering data and other field information to be used in the preparation of scientific reports; compile and organize environmental data collected by others, and/or for use by others
• Contributing to, and preparing and reviewing technical reports presenting key findings, conclusions, and recommendations
• Support with generation of proposals and cost estimates, and other business development pursuits
• Develop work plans, health and safety plans
• Salary commensurate on experience and education
Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):
• Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Environmental Science, or a related field of study. An advanced degree is a plus
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in performing the various job responsibilities listed above
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and a strong work ethic
• Well-developed technical writing skills, ability to effectively communicate in multimedia formats, capability with Microsoft Office 365 suite of programs, including Teams, and use of Adobe Acrobat and/or Bluebeam
• Strong sense of urgency and self-initiative to meet tight project deadlines and manage multiple task requests simultaneously, while adhering to approved scope, budget, schedule, and expected quality standards
• Ability to perform work duties independently and in team environments
• Willing and able to work outside in all weather conditions and for extended periods in a variety of conditions including but not limited to sites containing hazardous substances/waste. May be standing for extended periods of time wearing required PPE at sites including hard hats, steel-toed boots, safety vest, safety glasses, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
• OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification
• EPA AHERA Asbestos Inspector certification and experience. Other AHERA certifications and EPA Lead-Based Paint Inspector certifications are also preferred.
• Experience conducting asbestos abatement oversight, including clearance sampling and reporting
• Experience conducting fieldwork and applicable reporting associated with UST closure assessments, and LUST and CERCLA investigations and remediation
• GIS and/or AutoCAD experience
• Emergency response experience for various spills, where a quick response and an ability to make command decisions as needed
• Experience developing SPCC plans and SWPPP plans a plus
• Knowledge of applicable California regulations to conduct similar work (especially in southern California), including CEQA-related activities
• Familiarity with ADEQ, EPA, ADOT, and other federal, state, and local rules including NEPA and other regulations pertaining to environment evaluation and analysis
