About the position

The Environmental Scientist - Natural Resources position at S&ME Inc. involves project management and fieldwork related to natural resource assessments and permitting in the commercial real estate, local government, and transportation sectors in Middle Tennessee. The role requires strong knowledge of the NEPA process and federal and state environmental regulations, particularly concerning water resources and endangered species. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting assessments, preparing proposals, managing projects, and developing client relationships while ensuring high-quality service delivery.

Responsibilities
• Conduct fieldwork and reporting for jurisdictional waters assessment, stream quantification tool (SQT), Tennessee Rapid Assessment Methodology (TRAM), threatened and endangered species assessments, and wetland/stream mitigation support services.

• Prepare proposals, manage projects and budgets relating to wetlands, streams, threatened and endangered species assessments, 401/404 permitting, and wetland/stream mitigation support services.
,
• Prepare quality reports for clients and communicate findings/conclusions promptly.
,
• Support other environmental projects including Phase I ESAs, stormwater sampling, and other necessary activities.
,
• Develop new client relationships and participate in business development activities to win new work and contribute to S&ME's financial success.
,
• Collaborate with S&ME's Geotechnical Engineering and Construction Services teams to successfully win and execute multi-service projects.

Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Geology, Chemistry or related field.
,
• 5+ years of experience in wetland delineations, stream determinations, permitting, mitigation support, and endangered species assessments.
,
• Basic technical writing skills at the college level.
,
• Completion of basic wetland delineation training as specified by the USACE.
,
• Completion of OSHA Hazwoper 40-hour or 8-hour refresher courses.
,
• Two active certifications from Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS), Tennessee Qualified Hydrologic Professional (QHP), Level I and/or II Erosion Protection and Sediment Control Certified, or Licensed Soil Scientist certification.

Nice-to-haves
