Barr Engineering Company is seeking a mid-level Environmental Scientist in Bismarck, ND, to work on environmental impact assessments and compliance projects. Responsibilities include conducting assessments, species reviews, and communicating with regulatory agencies. Candidates should have a bachelor's degree, 8 years of experience, and strong communication skills. The position offers a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for both office and remote work.
Job Description:
Summary:
Barr is seeking a mid-level environmental scientist to join our team and undertake challenging and fast-paced work on environmental impact assessment, permitting, and compliance projects. The person in this position will work with other Barr staff members, regulatory staff, clients, and subcontractors and will have opportunities to grow the overall environmental review and natural resources practices at Barr. The work may involve short-term, out-of-town assignments in the field or another office.
Project work may include:
• Conducting and writing environmental impact assessments and related documentation
• Performing desktop and field-based threatened and endangered species reviews and other biological and/or natural resources inventories (i.e., raptor surveys, migratory bird surveys, noxious weed inventories, etc.)
• Conducting wetland delineations, inventories, and functional assessments
• Communicating with regulatory agencies and client contacts
• Developing and reviewing environmental permit applications
• Reviewing field reports to verify environmental compliance
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in environmental science/studies/policy, ecology, natural resources management, or a related field
• 8 years of relevant post-undergraduate experience
• Environmental consulting or regulatory agency work experience
• Wetland delineation, wetland assessment, wetland restoration design and construction, and restoration project contracting and management experience
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Experience writing reports of findings for client and agency distribution
• Project and task management experience
• Attention to detail
• Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with teams of specialists and regulators at all levels
• Flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedule as required to meet deadlines and/or client needs
• Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future
• Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications:
• 10 years of relevant post-undergraduate experience
• Strong leadership and team-building skills
• Advanced degree in a related area or specialized experience in the fields of environmental science or natural resources
• Experience with state and federal environmental review, regulatory interpretation, and permitting processes (including EAW, EA, and EIS) in the Midwest
• Wetland delineation, wetland functional assessment, wetland restoration design and construction, and restoration project monitoring, contracting, and management experience
• Applied knowledge of state and federal endangered species programs
• Experience with proposal development, business development, and client management
• Familiarity with GIS tools
A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Bismarck, North Dakota, office.
Compensation:
The anticipated base salary range for this position is $70,000-$95,000/year. This position is classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Barr has a "no retained earnings" model and distributes all its profit to our employees through our bonus plan and ESOP.

NOTE: Applicant must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites. Work may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided.
