The City of Edmonton is hiring an Environmental Coordinator to support its Environment and Climate Resilience section. This role involves managing the environmental management system in line with ISO 14001, ensuring compliance with regulations, and improving environmental performance. The City of Edmonton is seeking a highly motivated Environmental Coordinator to join our dedicated Environment and Climate Resilience section within Urban Planning and Economy. Bring your expertise in environmental protection, regulatory knowledge, and remediation to our innovative and high-performing team.
The Environmental Coordinator provides crucial support to assigned client business areas, ensuring the effective management and maintenance of the organization's environmental management system (Enviso) in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard. This system is vital for protecting the environment, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and continuously enhancing environmental performance. Reporting to an Environmental Manager, you will collaborate with technical, environmental, and engineering specialists to achieve environmental objectives and targets. Your work will involve planning, supporting, and coordinating activities to maintain and continuously improve the environmental management system. You will also be responsible for executing processes, procedures, and controls to ensure environmental compliance and investigating and identifying environmental issues.
What will you do?
• Champion environmental excellence by supporting and enhancing our ISO 14001-aligned environmental management system
• Dive into regulatory compliance, ensuring we're always in tip-top shape with our procedures and environmental legislation
• Provide high-quality advice and support on environmental regulations, permitting pathways, and risk mitigation strategies
• Be an environmental detective, investigating issues and finding solutions to keep the City of Edmonton compliant and continuously improving
• Share your expertise! You'll provide valuable environmental advice to our internal teams, helping them set green objectives
• Craft compelling technical reports, translating complex environmental data into clear, actionable insights
• Become a trusted liaison, fostering strong connections between our business areas and regulatory bodies
• Lead exciting environmental projects and studies, from procurement to completion, ensuring top-notch quality
• Stay ahead of the curve, researching and developing new environmental practices and emergency preparedness plans
• Be a catalyst for change, inspiring continuous improvement and helping us achieve our environmental goals
Qualifications:
• University degree in Sciences (Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience) or Engineering (Environmental); OR completion of a recognized two-year diploma program in Sciences or Technology with specialization in Environmental Sciences
• A minimum of 6 years of experience with a degree; OR 8 years with a diploma in areas such as environmental permitting, wetland management, wastewater treatment, the Water Act, and environmental regulation
Assets:
• Registration as a professional in an environmental discipline (P.Biol., P.Ag., or eligible for designation)
• Wetland Authenticating Professional (eligible to sign-off on regulatory documents in Alberta)
• Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist (QAES)
• Experience working in cross-functional teams in large, complex organizations
• Project management, data management, and GIS experience
Skills required for success:
• Significant working knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, standards, and best management practices
• Experience preparing or reviewing environmental impact assessments, biophysical evaluations, and erosion/sediment control plans
• Experience leading environmental regulatory management, including strategic planning and securing federal, provincial, and municipal approvals
• Experience with incident investigation, risk assessment, and navigating the provincial Digital Regulatory Assurance System (DRAS)
• Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and conflict-management skills
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to inform decision-makers and develop technical documents
• Ability to coordinate and facilitate meetings with internal staff and external agencies
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in unfavorable weather conditions
• Proficiency with Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Slides, etc.)

Conditions of Employment:
• Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
• Compliance with City of Edmonton safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as steel-toed boots
• Requirement to arrange own transportation for City business (reimbursed per City policy) and obtain business auto insurance
• Applicants may be tested
Work Environment:
• This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement as per the CSU 52 Letter of Understanding
• Weekly hours of work are currently under review and may change in accordance with the collective agreement

Up to 2 temporary full-time positions for up to 11 months
Hours of Work: 33.75 or 40 hours per week
Salary Range:
33.75 hour week: $54.155 - $69.110 (Hourly)
40 hour week: $51.181 - $65.310 (Hourly)
Note: Salary ranges are being updated in accordance with the recently ratified CSU 52 collective agreement.
