Duties Summary

The Environmental Compliance Officer oversees the Department of Transportation's (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). environmental compliance program, serving as chief staff officer and advisor to the Director of Transportation; develops and implements policies, procedures and programs to ensure compliance with Federal and State laws, rules, regulations and requirements; serves as departmental point of contact for Environmental Law matters between DOT and other State, Federal, county and private agencies;

and performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Legal Authorization To Work: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Specialized Experience: Three (3) years of responsible professional work experience involved in the field of environmental management which required knowledge and application of the principles, practices, and techniques of environmental protection. The experience must have demonstrated that the applicant possesses knowledge of public health principles, practices, laws, and rules pertinent to one or more environmental protection programs.

Supervisory Experience: Two (2) years work experience which includes (1) planning, organizing, scheduling, directing the work of others; (2) assigning and reviewing their work; (3) advising them on difficult work problems (4) training and developing subordinates; and (5) evaluating their work performance and disciplining them when necessary.

Managerial Aptitude: Applicants must possess managerial aptitude. Managerial aptitude will be considered to have been met through successful performance of, or substantial participation in, organizing scheduling, and coordinating a group of activities in order to attain program objectives within time, resource and budgetary limitations; interest in management demonstrated by the performance of work assignments in a manner which clearly increases awareness of problems and the ability to solve them;

completion of educational or training courses in the areas of management accompanied by the application of principles, which were learned, to work assignments; management’s observation and evaluation of the applicant’s leadership and managerial capabilities; success in trial assignments to managerial and/or administrative tasks.
