The San Francisco Bay Conservation & Development Commission is hiring an Environmental Climate Scientist to support climate science and sea level rise adaptation initiatives. Responsibilities include maintaining a dashboard, providing scientific support for planning, and developing tools for permitting efficiency. The position is hybrid with telework options available. Position: Environmental Climate Scientist at San Francisco Bay Conservation & Development Commission San [...] Job Description and DutiesBCDC is seeking an Environmental Scientist to join the Adapting to Rising Tides Data and Science Unit. This position will support this unit, as well as the agency as a whole, with expertise in climate science and sea level rise adaptation as it applies to planning and policy initiatives around coastal management. This position represents a unique opportunity to ensure that regional decisions regarding adaptation planning and shoreline project permitting is informed by cutting‑edge academic and scientific research alongside non‑traditional or community knowledge.Responsibilities:Maintain the Bay Adapt Currents sea level rise adaptation metric dashboard.Provide scientific support for sea level rise planning related to the Regional Shoreline Adaptation Plan (RSAP).Provide scientific support for San Francisco Bay Plan (Bay Plan) updates.Develop tools and trainings to improve permitting efficiency related to sea level rise and Bay Plan climate change policies.Represent BCDC on collaborative regional scientific efforts.Assessment of fit for the position depends on fit using three criteria: Minimum requirements (see below), knowledge, skills, and abilities as outlined in the Duty Statement , and desirable qualifications (see below). Telework is available for this position in accordance with BCDC Telework Policy and Procedures.Desirable QualificationsIn addition to evaluating each candidate’s relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:Competency in science and data analysis, project management, data communication, and problem solving.Proficiency in science or environmental‑based analysis (including analysis programs that could include 'ArcGIS', 'R', 'Python' or other applicable technologies) and skills in user design and data visualization with data visualization software (e.g. 'Tableau' or 'Power BI').Familiarity with the Bay Area environmental or sea level rise adaptation planning context.Tenacious problem solver with strong data sleuthing, conditioning, analysis, troubleshooting, and communication skills who is eager to take on novel multi‑disciplinary and data‑driven projects.Skilled at designing effective analysis methods and processes that are fair and transparent, invite participation, and acknowledge multi‑disciplinary inputs.Ability to develop project plans and feel confident making decisions in concert with their supervisor.The person should love the Bay and its shoreline and value BCDC’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice, and actively contribute to creating these conditions.
