Job Description

The Conservancy of Southwest Florida seeks a Director of Environmental Science in Naples, FL, with a Master's degree and 7-10 years of leadership experience in environmental science. The role involves overseeing scientific programs, guiding research, and engaging with stakeholders to advance conservation initiatives. Responsibilities include managing research projects, developing partnerships, and advising on environmental strategies. This is a full-time position requiring both office and fieldwork.

Description


The Conservancy of Southwest Florida advances environmental conservation through science, policy, and community engagement. This leadership role oversees the organization’s scientific programs, guiding research that informs policy and supports ecosystem protection across the region.


The position directs a multidisciplinary team and leads development of a research agenda focused on coastal and subtropical ecosystems. The role combines scientific oversight, stakeholder engagement, and organizational leadership to advance conservation outcomes and strengthen partnerships.


Responsibilities



Represent the Science Department at public events, donor meetings, and policy forums
Advise senior leadership and board members on environmental strategies and priorities
Engage donors and stakeholders to support funding and program development
Serve as spokesperson on regional and statewide environmental initiatives
Lead development and execution of environmental research programs
Oversee scientific proposals, technical reports, and publications
Manage major research projects including water quality, habitat restoration, and species monitoring
Lead, mentor, and develop scientific staff and teams
Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and performance management
Build partnerships with academic, government, and nonprofit organizations
Collaborate across departments to integrate science into programs and campaigns
Manage departmental budgets and allocate resources strategically
Oversee grant development, reporting, and financial tracking
Ensure compliance with safety, data, and operational protocols

Minimum Requirements



Master’s degree in environmental science, marine science, ecology, or related field
Seven to ten years of progressive experience in environmental research and leadership
Experience managing scientific programs and teams
Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications



Ph.D. in environmental or related field
Experience in marine, coastal, or climate science
Experience conducting field research in subtropical ecosystems
Familiarity with GIS, environmental databases, or statistical tools

Work Environment: Combination of office and fieldwork in outdoor conditions
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in heat and humidity
