Job Description
Dynamic Planning + Science is hiring a Community Resilience Planner for a remote position based in California or Colorado. The role requires strong technical planning skills and involves managing client relationships and leading projects focused on community resilience. The salary ranges from $80,000 to $140,000, with expected travel to California clients (10-25% of work time). Flexible scheduling is supported, but general availability during standard business hours is required.
Pay:
$80,000 - $140,000 salary depending on experience and locale
Location:
Remote California- or Colorado-based in a reliable, distraction-free space suitable for focused work and virtual meetings. Subsidies for co-working space rental may be negotiated. Travel to California clients will be required.
Schedule:
General availability Monday to Friday during standard business hours (Pacific or Mountain Time) is required. Team members are expected to remain responsive to client communications, internal messages, and time-sensitive project needs during this window.
Flexible scheduling outside of standard hours is supported with manager coordination, provided that project deadlines, meeting commitments, and responsiveness expectations are consistently met.
Travel:
Approximately 10–25% of work time, primarily for in-person client meetings, workshops, and community outreach events in California and Colorado, depending on project needs, candidate location, and experience level.
Job Description:
Dynamic Planning + Science is seeking a highly capable, mid- to senior-level Community Resilience Planner to join our growing team. This role is ideal for a self-directed professional who brings strong technical planning skills, thrives in a remote work environment, and is comfortable leading both projects and client relationships.
DP+S specializes in helping our clients build community resilience through data-driven current and long-range planning, including hazard mitigation, public safety, affordable housing, water conservation, fire protection, floodplain management, and site development. Our work spans general and comprehensive plans, housing elements and strategies, single- and multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plans, climate risk assessments, code reviews and updates, and plan and project implementation across the western United States (primarily California and Colorado).
This position plays a critical role in delivering high-quality planning services and documents, managing client relationships, and leading public and stakeholder engagement efforts. We are seeking a planner who demonstrates task ownership and initiative, leadership and team skills, technical excellence, and accountability in both work product and time management. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead and support preparation of long-range plans such as Hazard Mitigation Plans (HMPs / MJHMPs), General/Comprehensive Plans or components thereof (e.g., Safety, Housing, Environmental Justice, Water Conservation), and Housing Action PlansLead and support current planning services such as local government staff augmentation, development review, site development and entitlements, and regulatory updatesManage multiple projects simultaneously, including scope, schedule, and budget tracking; deliverable production and quality control; and coordination with team members, subconsultants, clients, and stakeholdersLead and facilitate meetings of 5–100+ people with various levels of expertise, including:Public workshops and outreach eventsCity Council, Planning Commission, and other board meetingsTechnical advisory and planning team meetingsClient, team, and subcontractor coordination callsTravel as needed to support in-person meetings and project deliveryMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning, environmental policy and planning, public administration, geographic information systems, or related field5+ years of professional planning experience in local, urban, regional, environmental, hazard mitigation, resilience, or similar planningStrong written and verbal communication, meeting facilitation, and presentation skillsDemonstrated experience in technical writing and producing professional planning documentsAbility to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and stakeholdersKnowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and policies related to planningStrong problem-solving skills with the ability to think critically and propose innovative solutionsData analysis or GIS-informed planning experience, and strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and present data effectivelyExperience working in a remote or distributed team environmentMicrosoft Office products experience and skills (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree or 8+ years professional planning experience in urban and regional planning, environmental policy and planning, public administration, geographic information systems, or related fieldAICP (or other related professional certifications, e.g., AIA, CFM, CPG, PE)Supervisory experience of one or more team membersCEQA/NEPA or other environmental regulatory experienceState or federal grant writing or other funding strategy development, especially for hazard mitigation or affordable housingBringing or supporting existing client relationships or business development effortsWebsite editing experience (wordpress/elementor)Graphic design experience (illustrator, photoshop, indesign)GIS analysis experienceROLE SUPPORT
