Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. is hiring an Archaeological Laboratory Director in Indianapolis, IN. This full-time role involves leading laboratory operations for Cultural Resource compliance, managing artifact processing and curation, and shaping lab procedures. Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in a related field and significant laboratory experience. The position includes teamwork on projects nationwide but primarily requires work from the Indianapolis office.
As an Archaeological Laboratory Director (Project Scientist) for Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC), you will provide laboratory leadership for project teams with Cultural Resource compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. You will manage both historic and prehistoric artifact processing, analysis, and curation; lab work will include managing equipment needs, following CEC policies and state guidelines, attending project and department meetings, utilizing technical and analytical skills to identify and analyze artifacts, recording and photographing artifacts, creating artifact catalogues, writing methodologies and analyses of findings, assisting with cultural site interpretations, and preparing artifacts for curation. CEC is expanding our lab space, allowing this position the opportunity to help guide and shape how the lab space and its operating procedures will be organized, including assisting in the creation and adherence of standard operating procedures for the CEC cultural laboratory. This position would work primarily from the Indianapolis office but would include work from the entire Cultural Resources Practice nationwide. CEC is looking to fill this job posting as a full-time position.
• Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field;
• 5+ years of laboratory experience with general North American artifacts;
• Previous experience in all stages of the curation process for states in the Midcontinental and Eastern United States;
• Data entry skills;
• Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion;
• Ability to manage and guide supporting staff;
• Ability to speak and write professionally;
• Ability to pass a basic drug screen.

Preferred Qualifications:
• 10+ years of archaeological laboratory experience;
• 5+ laboratory experience with Midwest prehistoric and historic artifacts;
• Ability and desire to assist with fieldwork when laboratory work is limited;
• Familiarity with agency-specific cataloging and curation guidelines, such as the National Park Service;
• Previous experience in all stages of the curation process for states in the Southwest, Southeast, and Northern Plains;
• Familiarity with Microsoft Excel.
