AVP Principal and Major Gifts

Environmental Defense Fund

Overall Function:

The Associate Vice President, Principal Major Gifts provides strategic guidance and leadership for EDF's individual fundraising program. Responsibilities include oversight of major funder strategies, proposals, reports, internal and external relationships, communications, and operational processes. This role reports to the Vice President, Principal Major Gifts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a senior leader on the Principal Major Gifts team, partnering closely with the VP on all aspects of team management and strategic relationship management for top donors.
  • Provide leadership to the MG team, including mentorship and skill development for staff.
  • Plan, design, and execute strategies for revenue generation from donors in a portfolio, focusing on seven and eight-figure gifts.
  • Evaluate team strategies, processes, communication, and performance continually, identifying and implementing improvements as needed.
  • Ensure quality assurance across top solicitations, proposals, reports, and strategy documents.
  • Conduct special strategic projects to add value for the department or organization.
  • Participate in advancing EDF's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.

Qualifications:

  • 15 years of relevant development experience in individual giving, major gifts, or operational business planning.
  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree may substitute for up to 2 years of experience.
  • Experience managing individuals and teams, with strong leadership, interpersonal, analytical, and project management skills.
  • Ability to oversee complex projects with time-sensitive deliverables and work independently or collaboratively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, commitment to confidentiality, attention to detail, and strong computer skills.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency, inclusivity, and ability to work across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of environmental issues a plus.
  • Willingness to travel for donor and team meetings as needed across time zones.
