ICLEI USA is seeking a Variable Zero Waste Program Intern in Arvada, CO, to support the Municipal Zero Waste Program. Responsibilities include employee education, coordinating meetings, and assisting with zero waste events. The position is part-time (15 hours/week) for approximately 6 months, with a pay rate of $22/hour. The intern must work in-office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and attend occasional evening and weekend events.

All people, citizens and employees, will be treated with respect, relevance, and importance.HIRING RATE: $22.00/hourThis intern will revamp Lakewood’s Municipal Zero Waste Program alongside the Sustainability Division’s Zero Waste & Circularity Planner. The main focus will be creating and deploying employee education and training and materials, coordinating meetings with internal staff, and occasionally helping with zero waste events.This is not a remote, work from home position. Intern must have access to reliable method of transport. Workdays would be Tuesday and Wednesday in office at 470 S Allison Pkwy Lakewood. Willingness to staff and assist at occasional evening and weekend events is preferred.The duration of this internship is roughly 6 months at 15 hours a week.The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part‑time non‑benefitted position.Essential Duties and Responsibilities Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion. Employees must be able to perform the essential duties of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.Zero Waste InfrastructureInventory and map location of existing waste binsOrder new waste bins, signs, and stickersDeploy bins and post revamped waste stream signageDevelop Standard Operating ProcedureCoordinate and take notes at meetings with potential vendors for new specialty waste streamsCollect key waste related contractsCoordinate with custodial team on waste handling practicesDraft Municipal Zero Waste Standard Operating ProcedureZero Waste EventsCo‑manage city’s Reusable Dishware ProgramAssist with Zero Waste aspects of community eventsEmployee Education & TrainingConduct contamination assessments to identify problem materials and areasZero Waste Program Employee Training PowerpointZero Waste Employee QuizZero Waste Program Landing Page on Inside Lakewood (the city’s intranet)Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesProject ManagementBasic knowledge of waste streams and recycling, composting, and landfill processesInterpersonal skillsEmail writingMS 365 Office suiteCoordination of meetingsOrganizationAbility to retain follow up on action itemsDecision MakingEducation and Experience Education: Any education levelExperience: Experience working in zero waste programs, experience assisting in events, experience working in an office or professional setting.Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Must successfully complete and maintain required state or departmental physical standards and certifications.LIGHT WORKExerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
