Job Title: Wildlife Technician I - Great Salt Lake Ecosystem Program

Job Description:

Experience a unique opportunity working with a dedicated team of scientists and biologists on one of the largest saline ecosystems in the world. If you're interested in joining a team of professionals in Hooper, Utah, to conduct surveys and counts; collect field data and record information; and maintain facilities and equipment, the Division of Wildlife Resources has the opportunity you've been waiting for!

Responsibilities
• Conduct ongoing fieldwork, sampling, and laboratory procedures for brine shrimp enumeration and water sampling.
• Conduct ongoing fieldwork associated with surveys of breeding and migratory waterbirds by foot, vehicle, ATV, boat, or plane.
• Conduct facilities and equipment maintenance on lab/sampling equipment, boats, ATVs, trucks, buildings, and grounds.
• Conduct data entry related to brine shrimp, and brine flies.
• Assist biologists with ongoing lab and avian studies utilizing GIS software, Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.

Qualifications

REQUIRED/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must have or obtain and maintain a valid driver's license
• Must have a background in wildlife biology or closely related field
• Working on the lake during all seasons of the year in both extreme heat and cold
• May need to work holidays and/or weekends

PREFERRED/ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
• Have experience operating and maintaining boats with outboard motors
• Have experience identifying and enumerating brine shrimp in a laboratory setting
• Have experience maintaining equipment, facilities, and grounds including ATVs, boats, and janitorial services, etc.
• Have experience identifying and counting waterbirds by species during a survey
• Have operated vehicles and are able to tow and handle trailers
• Have familiarity with data entry and computer knowledge

Preference: May be given to applicants with a bachelor's degree or higher in wildlife biology or related field

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:
• Everyday Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
• Special Risks which would require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating trucks, trailers, boats, and ATVs. Risks working with hazardous chemicals, etc.

Physical Requirements:
• Strenuous physical activity.
• Working outdoors and on a large lake during every season of the year in both hot and cold extremes.
• High-risk environment with weather and specialized equipment concerns.
• May require the ability to stand, walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
