Iowa State University is seeking 1-2 Wildlife Monitoring Technicians focused on birds for a temporary full-time position in Indianola, IA. Description

Iowa State University is hiring 1–2 Wildlife Monitoring Technicians with a focus on birds to support the 20th field season of Iowa’s Multiple Species Inventory and Monitoring (MSIM) Program. These full-time, temporary positions will involve statewide travel and fieldwork on public lands to monitor birds and other wildlife groups.

Responsibilities
• Conduct bird point count surveys using visual and auditory cues
• Assist in butterfly surveys, handling, and identification
• Identify and measure plant species
• Record and enter data accurately
• Collaborate with a team and assist with various ecological survey tasks

Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree or current enrollment in wildlife ecology, biology, or related natural resource field
• Physical ability to work long hours in outdoor and rugged field conditions
• Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and evenings
• Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to work independently and on a team

Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in wildlife ecology, biology, or related field
• Familiarity with Midwest bird species (sight and sound)
• Experience with other taxonomic groups (e.g., mammals, herptiles, fish, mussels, odonates, butterflies, or plants)

Additional Notes
• Position is temporary full-time (up to 40 hours/week)
• Field vehicles provided; housing not included
• No overtime compensation; position ends by October 17, 2025
