The role involves supporting trout conservation efforts in local watersheds through project implementation, monitoring, and outreach activities. Description
Trout Unlimited’s Montana Water Program is seeking a seasonal restoration technician. The technician will work out of the Bozeman office and support activities that benefit trout conservation in the Yellowstone, Gallatin, and Madison watersheds in Montana. Time off as well as the start and end dates can be flexible. The position can be full or ¾ time.
Duration:
• June – September. Potential to be extended into October if funding allows
Tasks:
• Assist TU staff with implementing and developing restoration projects, monitoring, and grant writing
• Conduct monthly flow monitoring of TU instream flow leases and enter and manage streamflow data
• Participate in electrofishing for population estimates and brook trout removal
• Support TU outreach including coordinating stream cleanups, tabling outreach events, and postings on social media
• Aid partners with field work when assistance is needed by Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, US Forest Service, Gallatin Watershed Council, or Montana Freshwater Partners
Requirements
• Completed or working towards an undergraduate degree with studies related to fisheries, wildlife, biology, hydrology, or natural resources
• Capability of lifting heavy gear, working in and around water, and hiking all day over rough terrain in inclement weather
• Comfortably working in remote locations with the potential of encountering wildlife including grizzly bears and moose
• Current driver’s license and dependable vehicle (mileage reimbursed)
• Positive attitude, passion for coldwater conservation, and eagerness to work as a team
Other Desirable Skills (not required):
• Experience monitoring stream flows
• Knowledge of stream restoration techniques
• Experience hiking and camping in remote places
• Familiarity with Trout Unlimited and its mission
• Experience electrofishing and identifying trout species
• Equipment for camping and a quality phone or camera for taking pictures
• Experience with social media, Arc GIS, and Microsoft business suite
Salary Description
$15 – $17/hr. depending on experience
