The Bellisario College seeks candidates with a record of publishing and securing external funding for work focusing on the role of media narratives in shaping attitudes and behaviors regarding climate and the environment. We are particularly interested in candidates who take a social scientific approach to understanding how and why different types of media narratives affect different types of audiences' attitudes and behaviors.
The successful candidate will assume a key role in interdisciplinary research collaborations related to climate change on Penn State's campus as the position is co-funded by Penn State University's Institute of Energy and the Environment (IEE), http://www.iee.psu.edu/. The successful candidate should be a collaborative leader who will promote and enhance excellence and innovation in interdisciplinary research, as the hire will also be a part of Penn State's Climate Consortium (https://climate.psu.edu/).
A Ph.D. in communication, mass communication, journalism, or a related field is required. The candidate will also be expected to mentor graduate students who are interested in studying climate communication as well as engage in other teaching and service duties for the Bellisario College and Penn State.
Associate Professor - The associate professor should possess a terminal degree; must have demonstrated ability as an instructor or researcher; also provide evidence of an established reputation in scholarly, artistic, or professional achievement.
Professor - The professor should possess the same qualifications as the associate professor but must also provide evidence of a substantial record of advanced research and/or creative work, and of leadership in their field of specialization. This rank should be reserved for persons of proven stature in teaching and/or research.
Candidates must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the contact information of three references (name, job title, phone number, e-mail address) as part of their application materials. Review of applications will begin Jan. 13, 2025.
The Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications has four departments: Advertising/Public Relations, Film Production and Media Studies, Journalism, and Telecommunications. The successful candidate's departmental affiliation will be determined based on the candidate's teaching experience and area of focus. The successful candidate will also be eligible for appointment to the Bellisario College's graduate-program faculty. The Bellisario College currently offers Ph.D., M.A., and M.P.S. programs at the graduate level, with additional offerings possible in the future.
