Sustainability Internship

Casella Waste Systems, Inc. is offering a Sustainability Internship in Portsmouth, NH, for candidates pursuing degrees in environmental science or related fields. Interns will work on sustainability projects, engage in recycling education, conduct audits, and develop educational materials. They will gain exposure to operations through interviews and tours, and will complete a project during the internship. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential.
Position Summary

Casella offers a challenging internship opportunity for high-potential candidates. A real-life learning environment, interns work on critical sustainability projects that provide exposure to customers, various teams, and leaders within the organization. Interns are given challenging assignments that help them to become proficient in sustainability, business, and customer service.

This experience will provide exposure to Casella’s operations through professional interviews, facility tours, skills training, and the opportunity to support the company’s efforts to tangibly improve its environmental and social impacts.

Key Responsibilities
• Engages the public in targeted recycling education programs for select municipal, university, and/or industrial customers in support of the efforts to measurably reduce contamination and increase participation in recycling programs.
• Conducts onsite and/or curbside bin audits to determine what education would be helpful for customers.
• Provides virtual recycling facility tours to municipal customers to give customers an inside look of Casella’s facilities.
• Develops recycling education materials for specific audiences to educate customers about appropriate recycling techniques and the benefits of recycling.
• Collaborates with institutional and industrial customers to create customized recycling solutions for their unique operations and campuses.
• Tracks communitycustomer progress on key recycling metrics and brainstorms possible ideas of how to improve metrics.
• Prepares, completes, and presents one primary project about their internship experience.
• Participates in special projects as defined by the members of the Sustainability team.

Education, Experience & Qualifications

Applicants for the internship must be working towards a bachelor’s or other advanced degree from an accredited institution in environmental science, sustainability, business, engineering, or another related program. Strong communication, presentation, technology, and organizational skills combined with excellent problem solving, research, and analytical abilities are required.

Successful candidates will demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with the public and partner with individuals at all levels of the organization. A willingness and ability to engage proactively in continuous improvement is essential.

A valid driver’s license and an ability to travel within Casella’s operating footprint is required, with some overnight travel expected.
