Job Summary

The Chartwells Sustainability Coordinator at George Mason University acts as the liaison between dining services and the campus sustainability department. Responsibilities include implementing sustainability programs, training food service staff, monitoring data, and identifying efficiencies to advance initiatives. The role involves significant community engagement, including partnerships with M/WMEs, and requires aligning programs with client sustainability goals.

The coordinator will ensure staff are trained on sustainability initiatives, meet environmental targets, and oversee student internships related to sustainability and sourcing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Promote and increase M/WBE hyper-local purchasing.
• Train and motivate staff on sustainability initiatives.
• Implement and evaluate sustainability programs, conduct compliance checks, and analyze data.
• Develop and execute client-specific sustainability initiatives.
• Build strong relationships with clients, the campus community, and management to drive initiatives and educate.
• Assess progress on sustainable purchases and programs; update leadership accordingly.
• Engage the campus student community in sustainability discussions and initiatives.
• Assist culinary and management teams in sourcing appropriate products supporting campus initiatives.
• Suggest process improvements to enhance sustainability efforts.
• Evaluate potential impacts of sustainability projects, demonstrating ROI or shared value.
• Innovate to promote sustainability on campus.
• Conduct audits (sourcing, waste, AASHE STARS, carbon footprint).
• Organize educational sustainability events and community volunteering projects.
• Support other functions as needed.
Education and Experience
• Bachelor's degree in a sustainability-related field.
• Preferred: experience in higher education and/or food service sustainability.
• Master's degree is a plus.
• Strong public speaking skills required.
• Knowledge of Zero Waste and Circular Economy principles beneficial.
