Job Description
Barnard College seeks a full-time Sustainability Coordinator to support sustainability and climate action initiatives. Key responsibilities include managing the food sustainability program, collaborating with campus partners, organizing workshops, and enhancing sustainable dining practices. The role involves outreach, communication strategies, and oversight of student teams. This is an 18-month term position located in New York, NY, with a focus on achieving net zero emissions and promoting health and wellness.

Sustainability Coordinator
Job Summary:
The Sustainability Coordinator will collaborate closely with the Associate Director of Campus Sustainability and Climate Action to support and advance Barnard College’s sustainability, climate action, and dining services initiatives. A central responsibility is managing and expanding an interdisciplinary food sustainability and wellness program, including the Summer Food Institute, in alignment with the College’s net zero emissions, Circular Campus, and health and wellness goals.

Job Description:
Duties & Responsibilities:
The incumbent will perform a broad range of duties. Work requires frequent collaboration with a range of campus partners to design and execute initiatives, including but not limited to Facilities, Residential Life, Student Experience, Student Government, Faculty, Events Management and Communications.
Sustainable and Healthy Foods
• Expand and enhance the Sustainable and Healthy Foods program with initiatives focusing on sustainable agriculture, regenerative food systems, health and wellness, equity, access, and food justice.
• Develop and execute workshops, panels, speaker series, farm tours, and other events, managing timelines, budgets, and outreach strategies in coordination with campus partners.
• Administer the Summer Food Institute:
• Coordinate field trips, cooking experiences, and curriculum development for both undergraduate and pre-college students.
• Lead an academic 3 week summer experience for pre-college students.
• Partner with local community organizations for conferences and workshops.
• Work directly with Barnard Dining and Barnard’s dining services provider, Chartwells, to review and analyze sourcing of food. Develop strategies to prioritize and emphasize local and sustainable food sourcing, as well as general sustainability practices related to waste management or other topics.
• Research and implement best practices in sustainable dining services, defining performance indicators and tracking outcomes.
Sustainability and Campus Community
• Support a range of offices and departments in implementing sustainability goals achieving sustainability goals through workshops, action plans, and progress reporting.
• Create and execute effective communication and outreach strategies via a range of platforms, including written and verbal communication, social media, presentations, and other media as necessary to engage a range of audiences.
• Coordinate communication efforts with dining services marketing when appropriate.
• Research and write grant applications as needed.
• Provide oversight and leadership for student employee teams, Student Government, and student volunteers on a range of projects and events. Define clear duties and expectations for student employee teams, and give appropriate feedback and support.
• Support the Climate Action Committee or other committees as assigned, by scheduling, coordinating, communicating, developing minutes/notes of meetings.
• Oversee sustainability initiatives during New Student Orientation.
• Assist with the planning and execution of the Green Sale, Give and Go Green, and related move-in/move-out programs.
Other Duties as Assigned
• Perform miscellaneous tasks as necessary for the demonstrated successful implementation of assigned duties.
• Perform administrative tasks as necessary for paperwork and recordkeeping management.
• Perform data analysis as necessary or requested.
• Support other core Sustainability programming as necessary.
• Represent Barnard College as necessary and participate in training activities to maintain professional knowledge of sustainable food and management best practices.
Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Strong computer skills, including the ability to learn new software as necessary. Ability to fully utilize email, electronic calendars, Gsuite, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
• Knowledge of graphic programs such as Photoshop, InDesign and the Adobe Suite, Canva, and or similar a plus.
• Experience with AASHE STARS a plus.
• Knowledge of social media platforms and strategy, and basic web interfaces a plus.
• Knowledge of sustainable agriculture, and food service best practices, sustainability management, environmental justice, circular economies and GHG reporting protocols a plus.
• Strong workshop design, presentation, and facilitation skills.
• Detail-oriented. Excellent time management skills and ability to deliver work on assigned schedules.
• Must demonstrate integrity and sound judgment, leadership and communication skills.
• Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to understand individual program goals in the context of larger office, department, or College-wide goals and priorities.
• Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, student groups, and internal and external partners.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required with relevant coursework in sustainability, food systems, agriculture, circulator economy and/or sustainability management; master's degree preferred
• Professional and hands-on experience in related fields a plus
Position Information:
• 18 month term position
• Full-time, 35 hours per week
• Occasional weekend and evening work depending on the needs of the Department/College

Salary: $64, 350 annually
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
