Job Description

The City of Flint is seeking a Sustainability Coordinator to manage grants and lead sustainability initiatives. Responsibilities include compliance oversight, grant writing, community engagement, and policy development for environmental justice and climate resilience. The role requires a bachelor's degree in a related field and one year of relevant experience. This is a full-time position based in Flint, MI, with a salary range of $26.32–29.18 per hour.
The Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for the administration of the grant, as well as leading internal sustainability initiatives.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the supervision of the Grants Management Officer.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
As the City of Flint is the fiduciary agency for this grant that funds outside organizations, the Sustainability Coordinator must ensure compliance with grant requirements to provide reimbursement. Provides direct supervision of subordinate staff as required.
• Executes activities described in the Environmental Justice Government-to-Government grant, as awarded through the Environmental Protection Agency.
• Prepares documentation required for project funding from internal or external funding as appropriate.
• Seeks out, writes and submits grants for additional funding to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the City of Flint.
• Researches and identifies grant-writing and other funding opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the City of Flint.
• Works with key community stakeholders to educate and empower residents and staff to reduce climate change and advocate for sustainability-focused initiatives.
• Participates in Climate Resilient Flint and other community collaboratives to coordinate efforts for maximum impact and to keep staff informed of new developments and opportunities for action.
• Assists in writing internal policies and procedures for sustainability and makes recommendations for environmental justice and climate resilience, per the Flint City Charter.
• Listens closely to the concerns of residents and community partners to make recommendations for updating the master plan to reach sustainability goals.
• Infuses activities and recommendations with equity principles.
• Tracks, measures and reports on progress in reaching local and regional sustainability goals.
• Supports community partners to increase capacity for environmental testing required to create baseline data toward the protection of public health.
• Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Competent in Microsoft Office computer applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Demonstrated competency in environmental literacy, data analytics, project management, and strategic thinking.
• Ability to work well individually and on a team.
• Must be passionate, motivated and a self-starter.
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science/engineering, climate science/sustainability or related field required.
• Master’s degree in environmental science/engineering, or climate science/sustainability preferred.
• One (1) year of professional experience in environmental health and/or environmental justice.
• Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license.
• Professional or volunteer experience in community organizing is desired.
• Possession of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) or other green building certifications preferred.
• Experience working in or with local government entities desired.
• Fluency in a language other than English desired.
