Job Description

Rondo Energy is seeking a Structural Design Engineer in Kansas City, KS, to design subsystems for their innovative Heat Batteries aimed at reducing CO2 emissions. Key responsibilities include developing structural designs, performing finite-element modeling, and ensuring compliance with codes. Candidates should have a degree in civil or mechanical engineering, 5+ years of experience in structural design, and proficiency in engineering software. The role is critical to advancing Rondo's mission of decarbonization.
About Rondo Energy

Rondo Energy's mission is to eliminate 15% of global CO2 emissions in 15 years.

To accomplish this mission, Rondo is deploying low-cost, zero-carbon Rondo Heat Batteries to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and to significantly decarbonize industrial processes that are commonly thought of as "difficult-to-decarbonize". Our Heat Batteries charge from intermittent renewables to provide high temperature, continuous heat for customers safely, reliably, at an unprecedented 98% efficiency - and at a cost point that is lower than any other method.

We are seeking an experienced and innovative Structural Engineer/Designer to join our team and help us revolutionize industrial heat at scale.

In this role, you will be primarily responsible for ensuring that the design of various subsystems within Rondo's Heat Batteries aligns with product requirements and meets performance criteria, including manufacturability and constructibility as well as cost-effectiveness. Your work in this role will be instrumental in driving the success of Rondo's Heat Batteries and our mission to decarbonize the world.

Join our team and together we can reduce world CO₂ emissions by 1% in 10 years, and by 15% in 15 years!

What You Will Do (key responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to):
• Develop structural design for components and connections of thermal system assemblies. Assemblies include main load-resisting structural members and support frames for architectural/mechanical components such as insulation walls/enclosures, louvers, ducts, plenums, pipes, etc.
• Execute structural designs in accordance with applicable national and international codes. Where code-based design is insufficient or not directly applicable, develop rigorous, well-documented design methodologies and testing/validation plans to ensure the safety and reliability of the final design solutions.
• Perform finite-element modeling and utilize other analytical methods to verify structural performance.
• Develop detailed design documentation, including drawings, sketches, calculation reports, and fabrication-ready CAD models.
• Support developing design requirements and specifications.
• Support design and construction coordination with internal and external stakeholders such as EPCs, general contractors, and design-assist partners.
• Support prototyping and/or testing required to achieve robust and cost-effective solutions for our core technology, as well as for tooling and other equipment that supports manufacturing.
• Operate in an inclusive, collaborative, and iterative design team, contributing to fostering an open engineering culture.

What You Will Bring:
• Bachelor’s degree in civil or mechanical engineering with a specialization in structures.
• 5+ years of experience designing structural systems, ideally within the context of process/industrial infrastructure projects.
• Experience working with several types of structural materials, including concrete, structural steel, cold-formed steel, and refractories.
• Experience in advanced FEA with static and dynamic structural modeling coupled with thermal modeling, heat transfer analysis, and stress cycling.
• Experience using structural engineering software such as SAP2000, SAFE, CFS, and Ideastatica.
• Excellent communication skills; comfortable gathering, synthesizing, and disseminating program information among internal and external technical and non-technical parties.
• Flexibility, openness, and creative problem-solving
• Comfort working with fast-based environments, with uncertainty, and in collaborative team settings.

Bonus Points!
• An advanced degree in structural mechanics
• PE license in civil/structural
• Experience in mechanical design
• Experience in FEA and CAD modeling (SolidWorks, Ansys, 3DEC) and BIM modeling and coordination (Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD)
• Experience working in a start-up environment

What We Offer:
• Comprehensive Medical Benefits
• Dental & Vision Benefits
• Life Insurance and ADD
• Up to 12 paid holidays per year, in addition to a company week-long holiday in December
• Flexible time off policy
• 401(k) plan with company match
• Rondo HQ is close to Oakland airport - one block from the Bay - and has stunning Bay views!

This role will be remote in Kansas City, KS with approximately 15% travel. The role will be eligible for base salary compensation, additional compensation in the form of equity and Rondo's excellent benefits listed above.
